Nauvoo House

Nauvoo House
Nauvoo, Illinois
Historical Background
A revelation (1) commanded the Mormons to build the Nauvoo House to provide housing for visitors to the city and on February 23, 1841 a committee was organized to oversee the hotel's construction. Since the building was estimated to cost about $150,000 the Mormons decided to issue stock to finance the construction. Joseph Smith donated the land for the hotel and in return he and his descendants were to receive rooms in the structure for their perpetual use.

Nauvoo House
Nauvoo, Illinois
The Nauvoo House was designed to be shaped in the form of an "L", with two 120-foot wings, a depth of 40 feet, and three stories in height. Work progressed sporadically and slowly because of a lack of funds. There was, however, a last effort to complete the building on August 18, 1845. Shortly thereafter the work on the Nauvoo House was discontinued in an effort to finish the temple. House walls reached the second floor in 1846, but was never finished.
