Female Relief Society of Nauvoo |
|
It was in this home that the idea for the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo was born. Sarah Granger Kimball, wife of Hiram Kimball, was an affluent young married woman who opened her beautiful home for social and religious gatherings. She organized a "Ladies Society" to sew shirts for the men working on the temple. Eliza R. Snow was asked to write a constitution for the society, which she did. When it was shown to the Prophet Joseph Smith, he said it was the best he'd ever seen, that their offering was accepted of the Lord, and He had something better for the sisters of the Church. On March 17, 1842, Joseph organized the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo under the direction of the Priesthood. Today, that society has become the oldest and largest women's organization in the world; and blesses the lives of the sisters in many nations. | |
