Cultural Hall and Masonic Temple

Cultural Hall and Masonic Temple
Nauvoo, Illinois
Freemasonry was introduced in Nauvoo March 15, 1842 when a lodge was organized under the direction of Illinois Grandmaster Abraham Jonas.

Many of the leading individuals in Nauvoo, including Joseph Smith, were initiated into Masonry thereafter. The Nauvoo Lodge had met occasionally in the upper room of Joseph Smith's General Store previous to the completion of the Masonic Hall in 1844. The Masonic Temple was dedicated by Hyrum Smith April 5, 1844 with over 500 people present.

The Cultural/Masonic Hall was used for several purposes besides lodge meetings, including musical and theatrical productions. It was one of the few three-story buildings in Nauvoo at that time.

There were also plays staged in the Cultural/Masonic Hall, various choirs sang, and Captain Pitt's Brass Band played stirring anthems and church hymns.

Several new hymns were introduced in Nauvoo, including the hymn now known as "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief."
