Heber C. Kimball Home

Heber C. Kimball Home
Nauvoo, Illinois
Built in 1845 by Heber C. Kimball, an early church leader, it was the first home restored in Nauvoo.

The main two-story structure was errected in 1845, while the one and a half story addition was built after the Mormon exodus of 1846. The house is a blending of both Federal and Greek Revival styles.

Above the balcony is a stone inscribed "H.C.K. 1845."

Biography
Heber C. Kimball was born June 14, 1801 at Sheldon, Franklin County, Vermont. He married Vilate Murry November 7, 1822 near Mendon, New York. Kimball was baptized April 16, 1832 at Mendon, New York and endowed in the upper floor of Joseph Smith's General Store May 4, 1842 and again in the Nauvoo Temple December 10, 1845.

Heber Kimball was ordained as an original member of the Twelve Apostles on February 14, 1835. Later, he was a member of the LDS Church First Presidency with Brigham Young at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Historical Background
In 1841, Kimball traded a piece of property for this lot. He originally built a log house with three lower rooms and one upstairs, and later built this brick structure.

Under the direction of Heber Kimball, a Young Gentlemen's and Young Ladies Relief Society of Nauvoo was organized for Nauvoo's young men and women.

Entry from Heber Kimball's Journal
"July 4, 1845, Friday - Had six masons come to work and four tenders. The day pleasant. Brothers Wallis and Solen Foster come and put the joists on the 2 floors of my house. Many of the Saints spent the day riding and music, and in different ways to amuse themselves. The Divernon come up from St. Louis, Quincy and other places for pleasure. Stopped in our city they went all over the city. Very civil. All things passed well and the Lord was with us." (1)
