 Seventies Hall Nauvoo, Illinois |
The Seventies were a priesthood group within the church and were given the responsibility for mission work. In this hall, the Seventies learned Gospel principles and missionary skills. They went forth from Nauvoo to carry the Gospel to every state in the Union, to the Indians, to Canada, Europe, Palestine, and the Pacific Islands. The bottom floor of the building was used for classes, lectures, and worship. The second floor contained the town library. The lot was donated by Edward Hunter. The construction was halted temporarily when a tornado destroyed one side of the building in 1844. However, the new building was ready for use in July of 1844 and the first of several dedicatory services was held on December 26, 1844. | |

| | The Seventies made great sacrifices to complete this building. They worked on the docks unloading riverboats where they were paid with lumber, and fired their own bricks. |

In December of 1844, Brigham Young offered the dedicatory prayer and asked, ". . . may it (the Hall) be filled with thy spirit that it may be called the gate of Heaven, and may all who enter within its doors be made to feel thy love and power." |

After the Saints left Nauvoo, the Hall was sold and used by the Presbyterians, the Catholics, and finally as a school. After the school moved to Main Street, the Hall was leveled to the ground. It's been reconstructed to be as close to the original as possible. In the 2nd floor meeting room is a complete alphabetized list of all the Seventies who once lived here. |
