Joseph Smith's Red Brick Store
Nauvoo, Illinois
This is a reconstructed building on the original site. It is typical of commercial buildings built in the Greek Revival style with large glazed doors across the front which could be opened in summer for ventilation.
Historical Background
The store opened for business on January 5, 1842, but Joseph Smith was unable to have an active roll in its management after 1842. The first story of the store was primarily dedicated to business. The second floor was used by a number of associations and organizations, including the Nauvoo Temple Committee, the Nauvoo City Council, the Nauvoo Legion for court martials, the Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, the Nauvoo Female Relief Society, and various priesthood quorums. The room was also used for blessing meetings and for school classes. The store was also the Church and city administrative office buildings in Nauvoo.
