How About Dinner And A Movie?

Our monthly potluck supper and movie is on
Sunday, February 26, 2012
Gather at 6:00 PM.

On the first Sunday in Lent, we gather for the monthly dinner and movie. This month’s selection is There Be Dragons. On the edge of ancient maps, “beyond here there be dragons” was often written as a warning. Of course “dragons” can live among us in various ways. This powerful movie explores themes of faith, forgiveness, friendship and fatherhood – all within both the horrors of war and in the mundane everyday world of being human. It is rated PG-13 for the violence and war scenes.

Come, take part in the evening of food, fellowship and faith conversation; bring a dish or two to share; bring a friend. The community is welcome.

If you can’t drive at night but would like to come, please let someone know; we can probably arrange transportation for you.

Lenten suppers are served each Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. for five weeks of Lent. Worship follows at 7:00 p.m. The schedule for the meals is as follows:

February 29th Worship Committee
March 7th Nurture Committee
March 14th Outreach Committee
March 21st Support Committee
March 28th WELCA

Community Easter Sunrise Service

The Easter Sunrise Service will be at Hildebran First Baptist Church at 7:00 a.m. Tony Bradshaw will preach.

Nurture Committee needs volunteers to help with coordinating the meals served to families following funerals at the church. Volunteers would help on the day of the funeral to set up the meal, serve, and clean up after the meal. If you would be willing to help with this ministry, please let Camille Annas or Ellen Cranford know. Several volunteers are needed to ensure that enough people will be available any time a funeral is conducted at the church.

Worship Assistants

If you would like to assist in the 10:30 a.m. service with any of the worship services (lay reader, assisting minister, acolyte, greeter, bread and wine bearer, communion assistant, Bible bearer, crucifier, torch bearer, altar guild, making bread, brass cleaner, usher, or cantor/singing the Kyrie, cleaning the church) please contact (397-3332) or e:mail (mthebron@embarqmail.com) the office.

The columbarium structure has been built. Niches are still available - $750 each. The hardscape and softscape are the next steps. The Columbarium Committee will be meeting Sunday, February 5 after worship to discuss the options for paving. And, they will meet Thursday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. All who are interested may attend.

If you would like to serve by helping to make bread, please speak with Janet Dameron or call the church office.

Hildebran First Baptist has a weekly seminar and GriefShare Support group that meets on Thursday from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in Bethany Hall. Please come join us any time.

We are collecting personal size toiletries you get from hotel rooms or in the mail for local shelters. Please place items in the baskets in each narthex.

EBCM & Pastor's Discretionary Fund

Every 5th Sunday we will have the Food Drive for East Burke Christian Ministries. We bring canned and other nonperishable food items to the altar as a way to support EBCM. High food costs are effecting many and agencies and food banks are running short or completely out. Thanks for sharing your blessings with those in need. During the offering time, you may bring your food gifts to the altar. We will then transport them to EBCM. If you would like to contribute financially to their ministry you can by marking your check or envelope with EBCM.

A special appeal will also be taken up to add to the “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund” which will be used at his discretion for confidential community needs. You may write a check to Mt. Hebron and designate on the memo line “discretionary fund”.

PRAYER SHAWLS

If there is anyone who knows how to knit or crochet and would be interested in teaching/helping a prayer shawl group, please contact the office by phone or e:mail.

COMMITTEES

There is a place for you to share your time and talents for the benefit of your church. The following committees are a great place for members to help their church while getting to know other members. Please review the following committee descriptions and sign up for one that best suits your interests. All committees meet every other month. We have included a list of current committee assignments, so please let us know if you wish to serve on a different committee than you are currently assigned.

Worship Committee - Assists in planning all regular and special services; trains ushers, altar guild members, and acolytes; supports the choir; maintains musical instruments; and decorates for church functions

Nurture Committee - Oversees educational programs and youth ministry; nominates committee members; arranges congregational volunteers, and oversees all fellowship meals and homecoming

Outreach Committee - Contacts shut-ins and in-active members at least once a year; reaches out to the unchurched; publicizes events of the congregations; folds and addresses newsletters; and stimulates congregational support of East Burke Christian Ministries

Support Committee - Exercises oversight of all financial affairs of the congregation; annually reviews the church insurance policies; provides for audits of the accounts of the church; and oversees the maintenance of church property.

Remember all committees support the Lord's ministry through Mt. Hebron and your help is needed.

We Care About You
Please make sure someone contacts the church by phone: 397-3332, e:mail: mthebron@embarqmail.com, Reggie: 446-5891, or the prayer chain when a member or family member is having surgery, in or out of the hospital, etc so someone can call, send a card and/or visit them. The members here really do care.

Tape Ministry

If you or someone you know would like a copy of the 11:00 am Sunday service, please let the church office know.

My Door Is Open

As your Pastor, I want to work with an “open door” policy. You are free to drop by for a visit or as you have a need or you can certainly call for an appointment. For now, the following are general “office hours.” Monday through Wednesday 9-12:30. I’ll be in and out Monday through Wednesday during the afternoons as meetings and visitation schedules require. I do have a mailbox in the office where you can leave a message, or you can leave a message in the office with Lisa. I hope for Thursdays to be a large block of time devoted for sermon writing. I plan for Fridays to be used as my Sabbath time. Remember, that I have a lovely short commute, so my car may not be out in the parking lot when I’m in the Pastor’s Study.
— Pastor Russell
