50th Anniversary in 2009
Sylvan Lake Lutheran Church celebrated its 50th anniversary on September 13, 2009. We've come a long way from our first service in a one-room school in 1959. We belong to the Southeast Michigan Synod of the ELCA.
We held a wonderful banquet on September 12 and special worship service on September 13 led by the Bishop to celebrate this exciting milestone. Five former pastors and about 100 members and friends took part in this celebration.
Worship and Bible Study
We have a traditional worship service with communion every Sunday. Our service time is 9:00 a.m. True to our Lutheran heritage, we have coffee and treats following the service every week. Adult and children's Sunday School and Bible study are offered year-round at 10:30 a.m. after the fellowship time.
Wednesday evening services are held during Advent (in December) and Lent. We have a soup and salad supper before the services.
Community Involvement
Our congregation opens its doors to many community organizations--including the local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous, Ellie's Weigh (weight management), blood drives, flu shot clinics, health screening, grief support and city and subdivision meetings.
We support the Good Samaritan Church's Food Pantry in Pontiac, a program for local people in need. We adopt families in our community during holidays. And, 2011 was our fourth year to help with Habitat for Humanity home building and renovation in Oakland County.
Church Building
Our church is fully handicapped accessible. We recently replaced the roof and installed air conditioning in the sanctuary. A very special memorial garden was added in 2003 and provides a quiet place to meditate. The sanctuary has beautiful stained glass windows donated by members in honor of loved ones.
Where is Sylvan Lake?
Sylvan Lake is in the lakes area of Oakland County, Michigan, in West Bloomfield township, and in close proximity to Keego Harbor, Waterford, and the city of Pontiac. Sylvan Lake and many other nearby lakes offer water sports and activities year round. Snow skiing, golf courses, exercise clubs, skating arenas and metro and state parks are all in the area.
