In the Second World our Marines attacked Iwo Jima early in February 1942.The attached photos mostly deal with the capture of the volcanic Mt. Suribachi; almost 7000 Marines were killed that morning (and later), and about 21,000 Japanese were killed before the island was declared secure. The island had an airfield the proximetry of which saved the lives of thousands of of U.S. airman on their way back from bombing Japan. Many still- and movie camera- men covered this battle, and I have used their work to create this page.

Mount Suribachi lies is on the southern tip of the island; the northern end is mostly flat and includes the airfield. The photo shows a retired Marine who found some detritus while on the special 1985 visit of retired marines who fought on the island. The Japanese now control Iwo Jima and visits to it.

Mount Suribachi is in the background. In 1985 hundreds of marines made the visit to Iwo Jima ( some still suffering from the injuries they acquired 43 yrs before). The wording shown here is to be found later.

In the many years since the battle much of the vegetation that bombs blew away has returned, but not all. The original attack by our Matines took place at the right bottom of the photo. In their cunning the japanese withheld their gunfire (mostly from the Mount) until thousands of marines were ashore.

This photo shows 3 marines approaching the cemetery in 1942 (Suribachi is in the background). Some yrs ago all the bodies were returned to the United States.

This is the very famous photo taken by Joe Rosenthal of the second flag raised on the mount that day. Rosenthal almost missed it but (as he says) saw it coming in the corner of his eye, and quickly snapped the shutter This flag raising was NOT staged; of the six men who raised it some were killed in ensuing fighting. This photo received very wide publication and its topic is now in bronze near the United States Capitol. The original negative is still under lock and key in the Marines photo library.

This marks the exact spot at which the second flag was raised. On the top of Suribachi marines found a 20-foot piece of old Japanese water pipe with a bullet hole in it, and a flag was raised. A great hurhah rose from the marines below, with a concomitant burst of fire from the Japanese.
