Rhea County Interfaith Disaster Relief Chapter (LTC):

Hurricane Ivan spawned heavy rains and flooding across much of the Southern region beyond Florida. Alone in all of Tennessee, Rhea County experienced significant flooding on September 17, 2004 with the most damages received in Spring City. The week following the floods, a long term recovery committee (LTC) began to form under the Church World Service leadership of Will Rabert. That committee has now completed its work under the leadership of Randy Schmittendorf, through the "good work" of director Chuck Kinney, and with regular resourcing from John Sims of LDR/TN.

Since the county was declared for mitigation and SBA, but not IA, the challenge to provide for unmet needs was significant. Church World Service granted seed money for its early activities and LDR/TN provided funding from LDR. Contrary to early projections for a year, the complete recovery was concluded officially on April 4, 2005, less than six months!
