Lutheran Disaster Response of Tennessee
Welcome! You may browse public areas of our site.

LDR/TN started on September 11,2000 (a very sad day one year later!)with a consultation by LDR and LSA representatives with LST and Episcopalian leaders. LST agreed to serve as the statewide liaison for LDR and proceeded to organize a working committee. The committee met regularly through the fall of 2001 and identified disaster-preparedness as its primary initial emphasis. To this end, a disaster-preparedness guideline was developed for congregational use. You can receive a download copy of this guideline if you represent a TN Lutheran or Episcopalian parish by using the "Request Form" on this site and identify your congregation by name and location, or you may download it directly from the main page of this site.

LDR/TN is keeping an active network of communications and cooperation open with LDR, Lutheran and Episcopal churches, and other agencies such as TN VOAD ("Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster"),the American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army. In the event of a disaster (natural, technological, or otherwise) these networks will hopefully pull together as "known" partners to help the communities effected and in need.

A "crisis intervention team" for SE states was formed and trained as a registered ICISF "Hotline Team"; the "Lutheran Support Team," but it has ceased to be active.

LDR/TN has been an active contributor to recoveries from 11-10-02 tornadoes in the Plateau region, May 2003 flooding in SE TN, May 2003 tornadoes in W TN, Oct. 2004 flooding from Hurricane Ivan in Rhea County, TN, and 2005-2006 Hurricane Katrina evacuee issues in TN.

American Red Cross Natl. Web Site
Many chapters of the ARC, including Chattanooga/Hamilton County, now have emergency backpacks available for $33 each. They include a first aid kit, flashlight with batteries, poncho, mylar blanket, work gloves, medical gloves, dust masks, a personal hygiene kit, whistle, and 6 pouches USOG approved foil packed water. LDR/TN recommends that every family provision each vehicle with one backpack for emergencies/disasters.

Regional Partnership
The only regional level of collaboration and cooperation in the national LDR network is LDR of the South (began as Region 9 of the ELCA, then expanded to include TX-LA-VI-Puerto Rico and all LCMS judicatories therein). Perhaps because this region has a high incidence of natural disasters, the coordinators of all LDR units regularly meet and work in partnership to provide response and relief. To learn more about the region, please use the link provided here to reach its home page. To link to the other regional LDRs that have web sites, click on the appropriate line below.
