House of Mercy is a program that offers "new beginnings" for homeless women and children. The target population is homeless women coming from treatment programs or the justice system who are in need of safe, secure housing and a supportive communal setting. House of Mercy provides a service-enriched environment to work through the issues affecting the lives of the women and their children. During their nine to twenty four month period of stay, women and children find the time and resources needed to prepare for their move to permanent housing and self-sufficiency. |

On October 13, 1996, the idea of the House of Mercy was first conceived by Sister Eileen as she reflected on her work in counseling with a client. "The single mother was struggling with an addiction, had a minimum wage position, and was in despair as to where she could get help. There was no such place...." With a lot of prayers and hope, Sister Eileen began working to provide a ministry for such women in need. The Sisters of Mercy agreed to sponsor the program and Catholic Healthcare Partners provided the seed money by mid 1997. With a broad base of community support, the assistance and collaboration of other agencies, and a "working" Board of Directors, House of Mercy became a "place of promise and hope" with its first residents on November 23, 1998. A second facility was added to meet expanding needs and a third expansion of facilities to serve more clients was completed in 2003, "Catherine's House." In 2008, the campus is undergoing major change and expansion. |
