Zion Lutheran Church
Clifton, Illinois
Zion Lutheran Church was founded in 1897 by Danish immigrants settling in the Clifton area. The congregation was associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church. For much of its history the congregation was served by seminary students serving several Danish Lutheran congregations in the area. In the 1930's it was decided that services would be conducted in English. Zion was served by its own full-time pastor for the first time in 1948. The original church building was moved 3 blocks west and a parish hall was added to it in 1952. In 1962 the Evangelical Lutheran Church merged to become part of the American Lutheran Chruch. Zion relocated to its present location in 1976 and built a new brick church building with sanctuary, parish hall and classrooms. In 1987 the American Lutheran Church merged to become part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Zion is in the Central/Southern Illinois Synod of the ELCA.

Zion Lutheran Church currently has 325 baptized members. We average 115 in attendance on Sunday morning and have 45 students enrolled in the Sunday School.

As part of our Danish heritage we hold an annual AEbleskiver Dinner (round pancakes cooked in a specially designed cast-iron AEbelskiver pan.)

Zion's mission statement states that we want all who come to Zion to know the we BELONG to Christ through our baptism. We BELIEVE that we BELIEVE in Jesus Chirst and his mercy, and that are called to BECOME the people God calls us to be.
