You were shaped for serving God!

"You were put on earth to make a contribution! The Bible says 'God has created us for a life of good deeds...' These good deeds are your service."

Below are ways that Bethel serves others.

Food Distribution
Bethel partners with Westside Food Bank to distribute food. Once a month Bethel receives a shipment of food and passes it out among people in the neighborhood.

Please call the church office, (602) 995-0629, if you would like a sack or box of food and find out about the next food distribution.

We Serve With A Compassionate and Loving Heart!
"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gav me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me...he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are membes of my family, you did it to me.'" Matthew 25: 35-36, 40

Bethel's members serve with a compassionate heart both near and far. The Great Compassion, Matthew 25:40, is an integral part of Bethel's purpose: "Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me."

Haiti Mission: St. Josephs Home for Boys
St. Joseph's Home for Boys is charged with positive energy from the boys, ages 8 to 18 years, who will enchant you with their singing, dancing, smiles, laughter and hearty hugs upon your arrival.

The boys make most of their livelihood by running the guesthouse. When they aren't attending classes, the boys do everything from helping cook your meals and cleaning the house to performing their dance theater for guests.

The confidence and pride that grows from working together and earning a weekly wage is self-evident. This is truly a family that works together, plays together, prays together and cares for each other.

Haiti, known to be the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, is usually cast as a nation of starvation, malnutrition, disease, homelessness, illiteracy, violence and destruction.

St. Joseph's Home for Boys is a haven within the grueling chaos of Port-au-Prince. Its founder, Michael Geilenfeld, was formerly a brother for Mother Theresa. His work was with abandoned children in Vietnam, Cambodia, Calcutta, Los Angeles, Haiti and El Salvador. After his 11 years of service, Michael decided to provide a place for street boys that would be a family instead of the night shelter system he had followed with the MC Brothers.

In January of 1985, Michael left the MC Brothers and returned to Haiti with $1000 and began with six boys and a prayer. This new family paid for six months rent on a four-room house. After paying the rent, they were left with $400 to live on.

Their prayers were heard, for journalists showed up that first day to tell his "new Life" story to the world. Financial support soon began to flow, visitors began to come and Michael's work grew into the success it is today.

Wings of Hope Home for Disabled Children
Located in the mountains above Petionville, in Fermathe, Haiti, Wings is home to approximately 30 children ages five to eighteen, half of whom are handicapped in some way.

The challenge is enormous: caring for the children, building a separate are for physical therapy treatments, and providing a loving but challenging environment that helps each child to develop to his or her full potential. The daily routine includes school, arts and crafts, music dancing and prayer.

Luckner (“Maya”) Fond-Rose, director is a graduate of St. Joseph’s Home for Boys. The young residents of Wings, Trinity and St. Joseph’s consider themselves part of the same family and there is much interaction between them.

Guests are encouraged to visit the Wings of Hope home to play and work with the children.

Guest House & Accomodations
If you want to experience Haitian reality while at the same time support a program for former homeless street children, St. Joseph’s Home for Boys is the place to stay.

Situated right off Delmas 91, on the Petionville line, St. Joseph’s Home for Boys is just 20 minutes from the airport. Located in a residential neighborhood, this seven-story home is tastefully furnished with tile floors and brightly colored walls covered with Haitian art. Rooms include not only sleeping areas, but also indoor and outdoor lounge areas, meeting areas, a spacious dining area, and a breezy rooftop terrace – complete with rattan furniture, potted plants, wind chimes and mountain views. One floor features an open-air chapel that is available for reflection and mediation. The guests at St. Joseph’s come from all over the world, and the breakfast and dinner conversations are lively, informative and sometimes inspirational. The dining room has become a place to make new friends, learn new things and expand your spiritual lives.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Guests rooms have two bunk beds with a bureau, desk and fan. There is one suite for couples with a private bath. Tiled bathrooms are clean and spacious, with indoor plumbing fixtures. Most of the surrounding neighborhood doesn’t have access to running water, therefore this house chooses to keep in solidarity with the poor and use water in a simple and conservative way. Each of the five bathrooms has a reservoir of water for gusts to draw from for bathing and flushing. Solar panels make electricity available, even when the city service is disrupted. The house has a capacity of 36 guests.

Resurrection Dance Theater
The Resurrection Dance Theater of Haiti is made up of the boys from St. Joseph’s who publicly perform Haitian dancing. Many of their self-written dances have themes relating to various experiences they had when living on the streets. Their brightly colored costumes and their lively movements create excitement and long-lasting memories. Performances can be seen at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys.
St. Joseph's finds Wings of Hope
To children who have been abandoned, the idea of family is a strong one, and many of the children who have lived at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys want to give other abandoned or orphaned children the love and support that St. Joseph’s gave to them.

These St. Joseph’s “graduates,” now young adults, urged Michael Geilenfeld and the youngsters at St. Joseph’s to take on a large challenge – caring for fourteen severely disabled children who were living at Wings of Hope, previously run by French missionaries. The missionaries were returning to France but were having trouble finding new homes for their young disabled residents. Michael proposed that they care for one child at St. Joseph’s; the boys at St. Joseph’s said, “No way, Michael! We’re going to care for all of them!”

They had visited “Wings” as it is affectionately called, and seen children who spent their entire days in bed, given little care and no compassion or love. They were shocked when the woman who ran the home described the children as “living pieces of furniture.” Remembering how they, too, were once seen as being of no value, they were determined to give these children – abandoned because of their handicaps – the experience of family that had changed their lives.

Thus was born Wings of Hope Home for Disabled children.
