RAMBLINGS

The seasons of the church have a certain rhythm to them, like the seasons of the year. Farmers know when to plant and when to harvest by the continual procession of the earth s seasons. The church year is much the same. We begin with the season of Advent, with the waiting and anticipation of the coming of the Lord. Christmas brings the birth of the Messiah, God s Word made flesh, into our midst. The Season of Epiphany soon follows with recognition that this Christ truly is Emmanuel, God with us. Next comes Lent, which focuses us on the mission of Christ, which leads to his Passion, and finally his death on the cross. Death does not have the final word, however, as at Easter, God raises Jesus from the dead and seals the fate of all believers -- eternal life with Him. The Easter season culminates with Jesus ascension to the Father, and the giving of the Holy Spirit to his disciples at Pentecost.

The months of June and July bring us into the summer months and into the season of Pentecost -- the great, long green season that lasts through the end of November. On Holy Trinity Sunday (May 26), we read from Matthew 28 Jesus giving his disciples The Great Commission : Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing ... and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. As the disciples have been given the Holy Spirit to perform their mission, the season provides an intensive period of reflection upon the teachings of Jesus. The season, therefore, focuses us on growth and discipleship.

In an odd sort of way, this is the time when

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

disciples are schooled in the teachings of Jesus,

even though it is a time when our children are out of school. Here in the church, we do not stop for 3 months like the schools. Each Lord s day we gather for worship of God and receive strength to continue our mission of reaching out to others with the Gospel. Our Sunday School continues through the summer for both adults and children. The adults will study the parables of Jesus, stories that Jesus used to describe life in the kingdom of God. We also have Bible School in July, where we will look at the mountains that we are forced to climb each day, and how faith empowers us to conquer them! All of this to strengthen our faith and facilitate our growth in Christ. May God richly bless your summer with growth and strength through Christ.

WITH SUMMER OUR

WORSHIP TIMES CHANGE

Beginning on June 2 until August 25, our worship will be at 8 a.m. & 10 a.m. Our Sunday School will be at 9 a.m.

We hope everyone will note the changes and come at the right time. For we don't want anyone to get confused by the time changes. Thanks for your cooperation.

May Highlights

Below are the highlights of discussions and actions taken at our May meeting:

We approved a special offering for Vacation Bible School during the month of June. [See article in this Visitor]

We agreed to host the VBS closing program on July 28 at 10 a.m.

We also approved the request to allow all the plate offering on that Sunday to be used for the VBS materials.

We discussed what we need to do for confirmation next year and decided that confirmation will be done for 7th and 8th grades through our Sunday School on Sunday morning. Using Lay Catechists to teach the youth except for the last semester of the 8th grade will be taught by the Pastors.

We decided that the council will meet in June and August, but will not meet in July.

We were presented with two questions from the presiding Bishop: 1. What are three factors that have impacted the mission and ministry of the church over the past three decades; and 2. What do we as a church need to do in order to address these concerns for the future of the church? We will discuss these at our June meeting. If you have ideas on these questions, please be in contact with your council representatives.

We approved moving communion from July 21 at 8 a.m. to July 28 at 8 a.m.

We approved the Deacon s request that there will be no one assigned to take care of the Nursery at the 8 a.m. worship during the months of June and July.

We discussed the need to develop a policy related to child protection. We will begin to look at the Safe Haven resource from the Synod at our next meeting.

We were informed that our Website is now up and is already drawing attention. We thank Bryan Slope for all he has done to help us.

We were informed that our new doors are on their way and will soon be installed. Our thanks to the Property Use Team.

We approved using a portion of the gift left us by Mildred Yoder to help revitalize our sound system.

I come, not because I am worthy, but because I have sinned and fallen short of what, by God s help, I might have been.

I come, not that there is any magic in partaking of Christ s body and blood, but because of the Lord s command, Do this for the remembrance.

I come, because Christ bids me come. It is His table and he invites me.

I come, because here is portrayed the sacrifice of my Lord who gave Himself for me.

I come, because I find myself drawn closer to God, the Christ of Calvary, and to those who kneel with me at Holy Communion. Yes, I am made to feel my kinship to all those everywhere who proclaim Christ as Savior.

I come, because I rise from the Lord s Table with a new strength, courage, and power to live for Him who died for me.

Live Alone Dinner

The Fidelis Class will, again, host their annual Live Alone dinner on Sunday, June 9, at 12:00 PM. The Ladies Auxiliary will prepare a great meal, as always. We are hopeful this will be a great event and that all who wish to attend will join us.

For the months of June and July,

there will be no 8 a.m. nursery

Since the Summer brings a lot of vacation time and it is hard to find adequate volunteers for the Nursery, we have decided not to assign anyone to the nursery for the 8 a.m. service during June and July. We hope this is not a hardship for any family.

We would, also, appreciate hearing from you about this decision, as we will need to decide in June, what we are to do in August. So your thoughts would be most appreciated. --Yours in Christ, The Church Council

CHILDREN S CHURCH NEEDS

YOUR HELP

Over the summer months, Barbara Pyle will be away several times. She will not be able to lead Children's Church on the following dates:

June 9 & 23, July 7, 21, and August 11 & 25.

If you can help lead children s church on any of those Sundays, please contact the church office at 267-5014.

The general plan for the summer is to present the 10 Commandments with an overview on June 2 and one commandment each Sunday to follow. Except, in the past there has not been children's church the Sunday of Bible School due to
their presentation, which this year is July 28.

Of course, if you want to work out your own ideas, it would be just fine.

 

About our church property. . .

Many of you have made inquiries about borrowing tables or chairs from our fellowship hall for yard sales, picnics, parties, etc. Unfortunately, due to the condition of our tables, the Property Use Committee, as well as the Church Council, has established a no-loan policy with regard to those items.

We would, also, like to remind you that should you borrow any other items from the church, please be sure and let Sherry Noakes or the church office know, so that we can keep track of where loaned items are, should they be needed.

 

INDEPENDENCE DAY - JULY 4

Celebrated in all states and U.S. territories, this day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of independence in 1776. Although the signing of this document was not completed until August, the Fourth of July has been accepted as the official anniversary of U.S. independence. The first observance took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776while city bells rang, bands played and the Declaration of Independence was read to the excited crowd. Independence day was declared a legal holiday in 1941 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Today, it is a major U.S. midsummer festival, with parades, speeches, special programs, pageants, games, fireworks, athletic competitions, picnics and barbecues.

The Declaration of Independence begins with the words... When in the Course of Human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of nature s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Older residents in our community

need our help.

The Area Agency on Aging of Somerset County would like to develop an Intergenerational Home Chore program. The purpose of such a program is to provide the elderly residents of our county with assistance. Many of these residents need help to do outside work, such as lawn care, window and porch cleaning or planting flowers.

If you can see yourself sharing time and energy with the Elderly, then please call and join in on this very rewarding project. Call 814-443-2681 or 1-800-452-0825 and ask to speak to Doris Gindlesperger. Your willingness to help can help many of our Elderly.

MINUTE PRAYER TIME

In W.W.II, there was an advisor to Churchill who organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every day at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, it s people and peace.

There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in America. If you would like to participate, every evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time, 8:00 PM Central Time, 7:00 PM Mountain Time, 6:00 PM Pacific Time, STOP whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the united States, its citizens, and for peace in the world.

BOY SCOUTS

Boy Scouts don t change the world, just a small part of it. As members of Holy Trinity (the charter organization for Boy Scouts in Berlin), we are trying to change the world, one boy at a time. Can you help us? We re in the process of converting the back of Luther Haus (Old Western Auto) into a new Scout Hall. The Scouts are projecting, within 2 years, of doubling their troop. They need room to grow.

Along with the renovation, we want to remember those folks who have made a significant contribution to scouting here in town. We re planning a book and plaque within the new hall. We want to raise $8,000 for the project. Labor is free, but materials and equipment are not. Won t you help with a generous contribution? In so doing, you will honor those who have given themselves and also invest in the future. Make checks payable to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and designate them for Scout Project. Special Offering in June for

The Special offering for the month of June has been designated for the Vacation Bible School program. You may use the Special offering envelopes found in the pews for your contributions. We are looking forward to another exciting year of VBS, and your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Once again we re collecting craft and money donations for Vacation Bible School. Following is a list of the items needed: Craft glue (not Elmer s Glue), Acrylic paints (all colors), clear contact paper, fun foam square sheets (all colors), glue, small artificial birds, decorative moss, magnet strips, 1 pom pons (all colors)

A FAMILY ALBUM

We often think of ourselves as the family of Christ but do you realize just how far your family extends? As the annual Synod Assembly approaches on June 14-16, you might be interested to see our family tree:

You are part of the family of our CONGREGATION - Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Our congregation and 28 other nearby Lutheran congregations work together as the Southern Somerset Conference. Our conference is one of 8 such groups, which together form the Allegheny Synod. Our Synod works as a partner with seven nearby Synods as the REGION 8 CENTER FOR MISSION.

Our region and eight other regions throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, form the family of Christ known as the EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA.

Why be concerned with what is sometimes called the larger church? The answer is simple and complex: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. As individual congregations, we are individual voices telling the Good News in our local Communities. As conferences, as Synods, as regions, as the ELCA, our voices swell to a chorus, which cannot be ignored.

June 13-15 is a time for business, a time for elections, a time for worship - but also a time to celebrate our family reunion. We are One in the Spirit!

Please include the Conference, the Synod, the Region, and the national Church in your prayers - as we strive to be the Family of God throughout this community -this state - this nation - and the world.

 

Summer Teachers needed

During June, July and August, we are looking for Sunday School Teachers and helpers. We d like you to consider sharing your faith with our youth. Please contact Esther Mowry if you can help with the elementary age youth. Your help makes our Sunday School great. So, please share your time and your faith - our youth depend on us!

 

WE ARE PREPARING TO CELEBRATE 225 YEARS OF MINISTRY

In 1777 our ancestors founded our church and we have been doing ministry in this place ever since. Now we want to celebrate those years of ministry. So we are planning on having three special events, which are as follows:

A picnic with our brothers and sisters of Trinity U.C.C., on September 7, at the Bill Dively Community Grove - Tickets will soon be on sale. Keep an eye posted for where and when to get them.

A Home Coming Sunday, on September 8, during our regular worship. On that Sunday, we will have only one worship service following our Sunday School at 10:40 a.m.

An Anniversary Service, with the Bishop, on Sunday, October 20, and a dinner at the Boro- Building following. On this Sunday, we will rearrange our time so that we will have no 8 a.m. worship, Sunday School will be at 9 a.m. and Worship, which will include communion, will be at 10:15 a.m. and dinner at the Borough building will follow worship.

The Anniversary Task force will further develop all these events. In addition, they are working on some special momentos, like a Cat s Meow piece of the church & Ornaments will be available to purchase and to help us remember the celebration.

In future Visitors, we will continue to keep you informed, as to what is developing. However, for now, we encourage you to mark these dates on your calendars, get out and buy those picnic tickets, and plan to join us for September 7, 8 & October 20; for you are not going to want to miss all the special things as well as special people this celebration will bring!

We have a Global Partner

for the sake of the Gospel!

Over the past decade our Allegheny Synod has been very supportive of the ministries of our partner - The Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church (KELC). Each year the designated projects lifted up by the Global Mission Ministry Team have received both prayerful and financial support. Now we encourage you to give that same support to this year s projects.

The First step in supporting our partner is the step of prayer. I want to encourage us, that for the duration of the Summer, to include in your weekly rhythm of prayer some time when you pray for Bishop Kahuthu and the members of the KELC . A good way to do this is keep informed by using the monthly prayer petitions and updates that will appear in your Visitor. Also, we encourage you to read and study about Kenya. All this will help us focus on the KELC and keep them in our prayers this Summer. For they are our partner in the Gospel and we share in all things as members of the same body!

 

ALSM Fund Drive

The Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries Membership Campaign 2001 is under way. A Council Member will be contacting you soon, so please prayerfully consider how you might like to help this important mission.

Congratulations to Nicholas Farber

Nicholas Farber, son of William and Michelle Farber, has been accepted to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum, of Medicine. Which is a career development program for high school students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in medicine. Nicholas will join only 350 other students from across the country.

He will learn about public health medical ethics research and general practice, including site visits to medical facilities and clinics. He ll also hear from and interact with leaders such as the Surgeon General of the U.S.

After the session at Emory University, Nicholas will travel for the 2nd part of the summer to Bryn Mawr University, Philadelphia to complete a second year of studies with a group of gifted and talented youth.

He will receive, for the 2nd consecutive year, an award from Johns Hopkins University for having one of the most outstanding mathematical and verbal SAT scores across the country.

UPCOMING YOUTH ACTIVITIES & EVENTS

Miniature Golf

All HTLC youth (bring along a friend) are invited to play miniature golf at Menser's Saturday, June 1st at 7:00pm.

We will meet at the church parking lot at 6:30 for any youth needing rides. After playing golf, if restaurant is open, we will stop for ice cream or drink. We should be back in Berlin around 8:00. Youth Ministry will pay for HTLC youth golfing. All others will need to pay. Please bring money for food or drink.

 

Join Hands Day

On Friday, June 14th, Altoona Synod invited our youth - 5th Grade and up to help with a clean-up project (last year it was to clean around the Curve Baseball Stadium). After a couple of hours of volunteering your services, we will get a chance to eat and spend the afternoon at Lakemont Park. There is a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in attending. Remember - Helping others brings back to you great rewards!

Lynn and Robin Walker are welcoming all HTLC youth (bring a friend) to Lake Stonycreek for a day of boating, swimming, tubing, or water skiing. Parents are welcome to stay, too! Starting a 2:00pm, on Saturday June 22, we will meet at the Walker's for some wet fun. Each family, please bring along a 2-Liter Drink or a bag of snacks to party with. Youth Ministry will provide Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and some other foods that go great with a picnic dinner. We will eat around 5:30 (if we can get anyone out of the water!). Please have your parents pick you up by 7:30pm. If you are not sure of directions, we will meet at the church parking lot at 1:30 p.m. Please call if you need a ride. Oh! Don't forget your SUNTAN LOTION, bathing suit, and beach towel!

Softball Game

The Youth Ministry will be trying to get a softball game going with another youth group sometime in July. Watch for details!

K-5th grade camping

A Possible Overnight Excursion at the Berlin Grove for the younger youth K through 5th Grade is being planned for sometime in Aug. Dates have not been set yet. Watch for more details.

 

Whiskey Rebellion Booth

Sept 28 and 29. We will be doing some of the same things as last year and adding some new ones. See Becky Philip if you have any suggestions!

Youth Fundraising!

Help support our youth ministry with these fund-raisers. Darlene Beachley is coordinating a Bake Sale on July 27 during the Sidewalk Sale Days. We will have a sign-up sheet for anyone willing to bake goodies for us.

CAR WASH at Walmart. On Saturday, Aug. 3rd, we have reserved for our youth to do a car wash. We need all the youth we can get to help with this one. If you have any questions or suggestions about any of these events, see Becky Philip 634- 8296, Lorrie Shaw 267-6541, or Mary Jo Kirk 267-4226. Have a great summer and plan to participate in your youth activities!

 

Calling All Phones

The youth will be recycling old cell phones from June 1 through August 31, 2002.

Only wireless cell phones can be recycled through this program with CTIA Wireless Foundation. The phones will then be reprogrammed, refurbished or recycled. Those that are acceptable will be used to help people in domestic violence situations.

Please bring your phones to the church sometime this summer--our goal is a phone a day!! Actually a few more, we would like to collect 100 phones by the end of the summer.

Please NO bag phones 9mobile-installed) 2-way radios, pagers or walkie-talkies. Only wireless CELL phones. No cordless phones that you use in the home either. Phones need not be in working order. Be sure to deactivate them before handing in. THANK YOU for helping us to help others!
