Our mission is the application of Christian and holistic principles to serve our congregation and the surrounding greater community by providing personal referrals and health education.
The parish nurse concept was conceived in the 1980s by Granger E. Westberg, a faculty member of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Westberg envisioned churches and synagogues as co-workers with the medical profession in keeping people healthy. Also, he recognized that nurses possessed a natural ability to act as intermediaries between the scientific world of medicine and the realm of the Spirit.
Furthermore, he realized that true health always includes an integration of the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of the person. Such a holistic approach represents a new way of caring for church members and others --- one that more closely resembles Christ's own ministry. Much more information about parish nursing is available from the St. Louis-based Deaconess Parish Nurse Ministries, which now houses the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. |
And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority ... to cure diseases, and he sent them to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal. . . . Luke 9:1-2 |

The Parish Nurse Ministry at Lutheran Church of the Atonement began in 1995 with a grant from Lutheran Charities Foundation. The program model was based on that described in Granger Westberg's book, "The Parish Nurse". The staff has generally consisted of two part-time nurses, supported by a Health Cabinet and supervised by Atonement's Board of Social Ministry and the Pastoral staff. It is currently funded through the congregational budget. In addition we received grant funding from the Missouri Foundation for Health effective beginning December 2007. |

"LIVE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT" WORKSHOP |
When:
Offered twice a year in the Spring and Fall
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
"Live Like Your Life Depends On It" is a six-week group education workshop series for adults living with a chronic condition. The program was developed by researchers at the Patient Education Research Center at Standford University to help people with chronic conditions increase self-confidence in their ability to manage their own health. People with chronic conditions have many similar concerns and problems. They must deal not only with their disease(s), but also with the impact these have on their lives and emotions.
The sessions provide information about issues related to a variety of conditions - diabetes, heart disease, stroke, asthma, arthritis, emphysema and others. The workshop series educates you about options for managing multiple symptoms, improving communication and finding appropriate resouces. It emphasizes helping and learning from one another through sharing experiences. This workshop is designed to complement the professional services provided by your health care team.
All class participants use a workbook and handouts that correspond to the workshop sessions.
This class was first offered here in the Fall of 2007 and future Spring and Fall sessions will be offered. Class size is limited.
Call the parish nurse for more information or to sign up. | |
