Rest is a Good Thing!Do you remember Sunday afternoons when we came home from church, dined together as a family, then kicked back to do some of our favorite things such as reading, napping, sitting on the porch, or visiting with each other? These activities are good for us. How did we get so far away from them?
With so many timesaving inventions, why does it seem that we spend more time using them and less time relating to our loved ones? When we overbook, forget appointments and feel like we are chasing our tail, how can we do what God would have us do? God wants us to be happy, not exhausted. We should do things as a family. We should talk and take notice of each other. We need to "remember the Sabbath" as the third commandment instructs.
Put away the cell phone, the Blackberry, the laptop, and actively participate in the day! The Sabbath can be a full day, an afternoon, or even an hour. We can use the Sabbath to enjoy all God's creation, the earth, our family, or ourselves. Some ideas for relaxation include a candle-lit bath, a walk along a lake or in the woods, a reflection on the sunset, a discussion with your kids about kid stuff, your favorite CD, or a meal with someone special.
Jesus rested when he felt overwhelmed. He let God take care of the world. Even Jesus took time off. We can follow His example. When we are extremely busy with preparations for a memorable holiday season, let us take the time to keep the Sabbath holy. Perhaps this year can be the most memorable holiday ever!
