Troop 350 PAST ACTIVITIES
2007
ACTIVITIES ARE IN DESCENDING ORDER
Beginning of year on top - end of year on bottom
OPEN HOUSE FOR JANUARY STARTS MONTHLY EVENT FOR RECRUITING
Once a month, starting in January, a Friday will be designated as Open House for New Members night. The Troop needs new members and our current membership needs to try everything to build up the Troop.

A special night of activities for visitors was staged. Starting in January the Newspaper were sent a News Release about the Open House. Whenever possible Troop Recruiting Flyers will be given out at the Subway exit at 53rd Street announcing the Open House that Friday. We look to try this for awhile and hopefully get a few new members.

COMMITTEE MEMBER STAFFS 'ATLANTIC EXTRAVAGANZA'

.
Troop Committee Member, David Coleman, helped staff the 'Atlantic Extravaganza' over the Martin Luther King Jr Weekend. The Event was held at Camp Pouch in Staten Island. This is a gathering of mostly Units from the old Atlantic Disatrict for a fun and advancemnt rich weekend.

Dave was there to help with Merit Badges he is a Counselor for and basic Advancement in the Morning for the newer Scouts. There are also group events for all attending. To give extra time the meals were all served in Berlin Lodge by a crew from on of the Units.

Its a fugood weekend activity where Scouts get to meet other Scouts and Scouters from southwest Brooklyn. The only drawback was the damp weather. Bit, it still was a good weekend.

2007 KLONDiKE AT CONEY ISLAND
The active members of Troop 350 joined in with Troop 563 to participate in this years annual Brooklyn Klondike Derby at Coney Island.

The area oposite the New York Aquarium became a transplanted part of the Klondike area of Alaska for a few hours. And like Alaska it was cold. No snow, but, the sand of the beach did just as well.

After trekking through stations along the Klondike trail for activies related to Scouting skills the day ended with the Grand Sled race. When it was over Troop 563 team with Scouts from both Troop came in 2nd overall. A fine result for a group of mostly newer Scouts.

WE MISS SUMMER CAMP IN 2007
We must sadly report that Troop 350 will miss Summer Camp in 2007. We have reported to the Council Office that we will not use our reservation for the Site in Camp Aquehonga this summer.

Once again we will not have enough Scouts wanting to attend. It is the Policy of the Troop that at least five Scouts must attend a camping Trip for it to happen. The Policy is to protect both Scouts and Scout Leaders.

First, it is unfair for a few Scouts to have to cover the many needed activities for them to run a week at Camp. Each Scout would need to double or triple up on responsibilities each day. The doesn't leave them much time for why they are at Camp - to have some fun.

Secound, it is unfair to adults to use scarce vacation time to take ounly two or three Scouts to Camp for a week. It adds additional responsibilities to the adult as well to see that everything needing to be done gets done each day. For a willing adult it may also ad a substancial financial burdon if they need to pay to coverage at work or at home.

Therefore, with less that five Scouts the Troop will not go on it's own. Any Troop member wanting to go will be directed to a neighboring Troop that is going. Adults still wanting to go can also go with the other Troop.

This is what the Troop did in 2006. We joined with Troop 23 during week One at Camp Aquehonga in order that our Scouts could go to Camp.

There is next year to look forward to.

SEPTEMBER 27, 2007 IS 80th ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST CHARTER

.
.
A Milestone in any Organization - its 80th Anniversay. For Troop 350 of Brooklyn, NY this once in a lifetime event happens on September 27, 2007.

It was 80 years ago that a Troop was organized by a few adults here in the Sunset Park neighborhood. For the first four years of its existance it had more than one group as it's Sponsor and nearly a new home each year. Finding a place that could hold Troop meetings was not easy.

But then in 1931 the new Pastor of St. Jacobi Evangelical Lutheraan Church, the Rev. Dr. Bauchmann, asked why his new Church did not have a Boy Scout Troop. Although Scouting was still a young program it had a reputation of a great program for boys. The local Scout Council was asked about having a Boy Scout program at St. Jacobi. At the very same time,, Boy Scout Troop 350, then meeting in the basement of a neighborhood house asked about finding a place appropriate to meet. Each was matched with the other and the Troop has been here ever since.

All those years after we are approaching its 80th Anniversary. Many of its past members have grown and some are no longer with us. They grew up to be Bank Officers, Ministers, Professional Tradesmen, Business owners and valued employees. All benefited from the time they spent in Troop 350 and the words they learned from the Scout Oath and Scout Law. They, their families and communities they live in are the better for it.

Starting this September there will be opportunities to celebrate. An Anniversary Dinner, Turkey Roast Campout, Holiday Party, Family Night and much, much more. As these events come along the word will be spread both here on its Website and by word of month. It is a time for joy and to celebrate. We look forward to seeing old friends and members.

HALLOWEEN GOOD TURN

.
.

For the third year Troop 350 particpated in the "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" program. This is another Troop Good Turn.

This year we averaged $8.40 per participant, with collected donations totalling over last year's amount. A very good effort for a very good cause.

All those participating are to be congratuated and Thanked for the effort. There will be some children in another part of the world who would not otherwise have been protected from serious illness without the vaccines provided by our efforts.

RECRUITING FLYER DISTRIBUTION DAYS

Get the Word out
.
Getting New Members will make or break the Troop.

We handed-out flyers so far only once because of scheduling conflicts.

On Wednesdays, when available, we will meet at St. Jacobi Church at 4 pm. We then will then cross the street and go to the 53rd Street Subway Stop and hand out flyers to people exiting the Subway.
