Music Through Concerts and Recitals
2004 - Present
.
.
Following the events of 9-11-01, St. Jacobi offered a new Ministry to the residents of the Community and all of the City. To help heal from that terrible event an ongoing monthly series of music Concerts and Recitals to provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life....

The idea was created through the observations of the Pastor of St. Jacobi, the Rev. Mary Chang, who is also a Chaplain at the Lutheran Medical Center of Brooklyn. Pastor Chang was one of the many clergy who offered their help in the days after the disaster. She saw how much time was put in by professionals and volunteers and how even short breaks of unrelated activity help restore strenght to these workers. She had the idea of free music and art activities not only for them, but for any who needed a break. And so was started the series of music concerts and recitals through the efforts of her and a few St. Jacobi members and friends.

September Concert 9/11 Anniversary

Returning to St. Jacobi were Drs Polidi and Sshmidt for a concert in the anniversary month of 9/11 for which this series was started and dedicated.

Dr. Polidi played the Marimba and was accompanied by Dr. Schmidt on piano. The hour long program was unusual for the instrument used, the Marimba. It was a soothing and refreshing program . Following the program light refreshments were enjoyed in Friendship Hall.

We thank these two gifted performers for their time and sharing of talent with the Brooklyn community through St. Jacobi.

March 2006 Doctors Honor Mozart

Pastor Introduces Artists

Dr Polidi & Dr Schmidt

During Concert
March 12th Concert featured Dr. Polidi on Violin and Dr. Schmidt on Piano. The honored the Birthday of Mozart with this month's concert at St. Jacobi

It was a slightly damp day on Sunday afternoon at 4pm as the monthly conser series program started. But, it was a nice turnout considering the weather of about 45 people for the program to honor the Birthday this month of Wolfgang A. Mozart.

St. Jacobi was honored with the very skilled Dr. Polidi on Violin. Dr. Polidi has played with many of the finest Orchestras in the world. In addition to his participation in the pieces by Mozart we were honored to hear works by a composer who perished in the holocost. A project close to the heart of Dr. Polidi. Making it all the more enjoyable was the wonderful accompanyment by Dr. Thomas Schmidt on Piano. Dr. Schmidt is currently Director of Music at St. Peters Lutheran Church at Citicorp Center in Manhattan.

Following the program both artists shared in the light refreshments in Friendship Hall. Our audience was able to speak with the artists and personally thank them for such a fine performance this day.

January 2006 Central Baptist Choir

Central Baptsit Gospel Choir at St. J
On January 8th the Gospel Choir of Central Baptist Church in Manhattan came for another visit to St. Jacobi. About two dozen of the members who compose the Gospel Choir presented our January program for a receptive audience.

Pastor Boby Lewis the Director and conductor of the program had the Choir offer a total of ten pieces that had both Solo and Choir presentations. From the serious to the enthusiastic, the contemplative to the uplifting the Choir showed their range of skills and enthusiasm in a wonderfully warm concert.

All those present went home filled with warmth on a somewhat cold evening. We appreciate the efforts and are thankful for the commitment they brought. St. Jacobi is looking forward to hearing them again here at S. Jacobi in the future.

Following the concert the Choir, family members and audience enjoyed light refreshments in Friendship Hall. This gave the opportunity to meet the Choir members and to thank them for their efforts in a wonderful presentation.

December 2005 Messiah Sing
December 11th saw a very well balanced vocal group come together for the semi-annual Messiah sing. St. Jacobi again hosted about two dozen people in a pick-up Chorus conducted by Dr, Thomas Schmidt of St. Peter's Manhattan.

It was an exceptional fine and well balenced sounding group this year. A nice sized audience was treated to sections of Part 1 of George Frederick Handel's "Messiah" and the Halleluyah Chorus from Part 2. Following the audience and Chorus enjoyed refreshments in Friendship Hall.

Cool Jazz on a Hot Sunday
It was noticeably hot on the afternoon of Sunday, July 10 th in Brooklyn. But the monthly Concert was really cool - really cool jazz that is, presented by the HS Quartet.

The HS Quartet is made up of Harold Stelter on Drums, Pete Levin on Keyboards, Ron McClure on Bass and Bill Kinslow on Sax. All are accomplished musicians who have played with many of the very well known individuals and groups such as Bloood, Sweat & Tears, Barry White, Tony Bennett and Paul Simon.

Their program this Sunday included Randy Weston, Richard Rogers, Bennie Golson, George Gershwin, Rogers & Hart, Antonio Carlos Jabin and Victor Young. If you were not there then you missed an exceptional performance. Very cool inside, while it was hot outside. We thank these artists for giving us their time and talents.

June 'Messiah" Sing

This edition of the Community Chorus
On a very , very warm and muggy Sunday in June our latest 'Messiah Sing-In' was held with the aid of a number of dedicated friends of St. Jacobi. The semi-annual gathering of enthusiasts of Handel's wodererful mussic performed once again.

One comes to expect cold weather when one hears there is to be a performance of portions of George Frederick Handel's "the Messiah". But we licke to do things differently. So we also offer it in June. A week or so earlier and it would have felf appropriate. But, this didn't matter to the dozen and a half volunteering comrising this edition of the Community Chorus.

With Dr. Thomas Schmidt on the Organ this time and Nelly Vulsic as Conductor another wonderful set of selections from the Oratorio was presented. The volunteers showed how they thoroughly enjoy performing the music. The audience was once again very appreciative of the efforts. St. Jacobi's Nave was filled with the beautiful singing for a late Sunday afternoon recital.

We thank the participants and invite them to return in cooler times this December for another series of sections from Handel.

Sound the Cello!
A wonderful uplifting concert was presented by Ms. Lisa Terry and Ms. Debra Fox on Sunday, April 10th as part of the ongoing concert series.

Ms. Terry was on the Baroque Cello and Ms Fox was on the Theorbo. Their program on the warm Spring day included pieces by Domenico Gabrieli, G.F. Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, G.B. Vitali, Giroiamo Kapsberger, Alessandro Piccinini and Diego Ortiz.

Both artists made full use of their instruments with a more bueatiful program. On such a wonderful spring day it was a wonderful afternoon for those in attendance. Thins was followed by a gathering in Friendship Hall where the community members had ample opportunity to speak with the musiciansss.

We appreciate the talents of the musicians and the audience had, one again, a high quality performace without having to go into Manhattan for it.

Buenos Aires - Paris Concert of Voice and Piano
Ms. Nelly Vuksic and Mr. Cesar Vuksic were the featured artists for our March Concert. This March 13th presentation of voice and piano was wonderfully received in this continuing series.

The was a wide variety of composers in the nearly dozen and a half pieces performed. There were works by Astor Piazzolla, Varlos Gardel, Jacques Prevert, Claude Debussey and many more. All wonderfully done with power and precision yet warmth and an ecompassing reach.

Followng the concert the audience joined the performers in Frienship Hall for light refreshments and the chance to talk and express their appreciation for such a nice musical presentation. We thank Nelly and Cesar Vuksic for being with us and sharing their talents this day.

Violin Recital and More for February

Dr. Thomas Schmidt, Mr. Chris Marols, Mr. Harold Stelter, Rev. Mary Chang and Mr. Edward Polidi
The program changed over the months - but only for the better. The February 2005 concert was fnally titled a 'Violin Recital' but it was more. Those in attendance were treated to a rare, extra special, high performace concert.

Billed as a 'Violin Recital' the featured musician was Mr. Edward Polidi. He is a world class violinist who has appeared with many of the top orchestras. In addition he has written about the left hand technique of playing the violin and has taken on the task of showing the world musical works of musician that perished in the holocaust.

But Mr. Polidi in the recital was aided by Dr. Thomas Schmidt on Piano. Dr. Schmidt is the Music Director and Cantor at St. Peters Lutheran Church at Citicorp Center in Manhattan. As well as by Mr. Harold Stelter a percussionist who has played and tour with his own group. And Mr Chis Marols on Bass who talants to fill in with a rich Bass line only enhanced the closing pieces.

An outstanding late afternoon concert offered for the people of Brooklyn by very fine musical artists. Works by Giuseppi Tartini, Johan Sebastin Back, Ludwig von Beethoven, George Gershwin and Claude Bolling were given in this concert. We appreciate their talents and wish there were more listeners to hear them.
.

Gospel Choir A Rousing Success
We started 2005 with something a little different. The Central Baptist Gospel Choir was our featured group for the January 2005 Concert. And we they ever 'a Joyour Noise to be Heard'.

The Gospel Choir came with only a portion of their group and that was 30 strong as it was. The Choir was recently back from a tour in Japan and last fall's singing of the National Anthem at the Republican National Convention in Manhattan.

A wonderful moving program that filled the heart and recharged the spiritual bateries. With voice and intruments they sang from the heart and filled St. Jacobi with songs of praise and inspiration. We were very blessed to have them in our monthly concert series and wish them the very best for their program of appearances this year.

Messiah Warms the Heart in December
Once again Dr. Schmidt led the All-Volunteer Community Chorus in the semi-Annual singing of portions of Handel's "The Messiah" here at St. Jacobi. We were warmed and comforted by the Demeber presentation.

In June and December a number of sections of Handel's famous work is performed by an all volunteer pick-up chorus. Everyone loves to sing this piece of music from individuals to Choir members to professional singers. We were pleased that Dr. Schmidt, Music Director, Organist and Cantor of St. Peter's at Citicorp Center in Manhattan again offered his services as Conductor.

We also thank those volunteering as memberes of the Chorus this December: Sopranos - Marion Palm, Lelia Johnson, Joyce Sorensen, Rosalia Siu, Jenny Mei, Linda Deng, Li Hui Huang, Meng Quing Zen, Mei Mei Chui, Stacy Mosher and Patricia Robinson. Altos - Rev. Mary Chang, Winnie Yiu, Nadine Cordes, Alice Leung, Karen Monsen, Rev. Phyllis James and Lin Shiu Chu. Tenors - Bernie Monseon, Peter Bobrick and Steven Leung. Bases - Len Vretholm, Tin Yuen, Otto Simes and Ronald Robinson.

Thank you to the many people who came to hear and be warmed spiritually as well as physically during the hour of great music. We look forward to the June 2005 presentation to continue to hear other sections of the Oratorio and of course the famous Hallelujah Chorus.

Wonderful October Music
A couple time the comment was made that one would not have thought of combining a French Horn and Cello for a concert. Yes, but it worked. The October concert was a wonderful mix of unexpected ingredients.

Ms. Angela Yeung on Cello and Mr. Scott Avenell on French Horn combined to offer a wonderful addition to our continuing series of concerts. They put together a performance that was interesting and entertaining. Mr Avenell was a last minute substitution for a Luter performer who had to bow out due to illness. However, that did not diminish the artistry and skill of the presentation for the 45 plus members of the audience.

Following the concert light refreshments were available and shared in Friendship Hall. We thanked the artists who had come in from the west coast for this event. We again look forward to next month's concert.
.

Corona Duo Make Sweet Music
The day after the third anniversary of the disaster at the World Trade Center another in the continuing series offered for healing was presented at St. Jacobi. We were please to welcone the Corona Duo offering music for strings.

Ms. Judith Spokes on violin and Mr. Kang Xia on Cello wowwed those in attendance with a beautiful harmony of insturments in presenting several well known classical pieces, interprettions of Chinese Folk melodies and a suprise to end the concert.

There was a duet by Firllo, a Paganini Rondo, music from Bach as a offering of classical pieses that were just supurb. There were three short pieces of Chinese Folk tunes that were from the Drum Dances known to many classical Chinese artist that were a wonderful light interlude. We were pleasently suprised by the closing duet that was an American classic from the Country Blue Grass vein of America's own style of music, the Orange Blossom Special.

Following the concert the Artist were welcomed warmly by the audience for coffee and cake in Friendship Hall. Severa perople were pleased to have the chance to talk informally to these highly skilled performers about musical topics. It was a wonderful couple hours on a Sunday afternoon. To forget and yet to honor the day that was before.

Jazz Trio Performs for July Concert
.
July 11th, the second Sunday of the month, a wonderful Jaz Trio performed as part of the month Concert Healing Ministry Series at St. Jacobi. Sonething different and a little new.

The artists were Mr. Ron McClure, Ms. Midriyo Tanaka and Ms. Masa Asai Bradley in a performance that was well received by the audience. The trio performed a few Jazz standards and several improvisations that moved the 35 to 40 in attendance. Several in the audience were first time listeners and were suprised by the very professional level of the music.

We thank those in attendance and the Artists for coming to the concert on this summer Sunday.

A Warm 'Messiah" Concert
June is the other half of the seme-annual Handel's 'Messiah' Concerts. Led by Dr. Schmidt the Music Director and Cantor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Manhattan at the CitiCorp Center. It was a warn June Sunday with a warm performance bu the volunteer singers.

This join in Community Chorus is a pick up group from here in the City. This is not a professional Chorus but rather a Chorus who profess a love of Handel's well known Oratorio. Two dozen volunteers ranging in skill from ' I can barely sing' to professional vocalist. They came to gether just to sing.

Anyone is welcome to become a part of the group. And for a dozen or so sections of the oritorio they did come together. Warming the heart with beautiful music that helped to recharge the spiritual battery of the listeners. It was well received and the Winter Concert is ever more antisipated for this December.
.

Duo Marchand performs in April
It happened that this month's concert was also on Easter Day. We were blessed to have the DUO MARCHAND returning for another cconcert. We also knew it would be a tough day for a potential audience. Along with several of those who have become our regulars we were interested to see several new faces - including a couple of renaissance enthusiasts. We were pleased to welcome them all.

Not the smallest audience but a very apreciative one. With many family gatherings we did not expect a big turrnout. We were please with an attendance of thirty however. The DUO MARCHAND did a wonderful performance once again of mostly Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century works for harp and voice.

March Recital a Vocal Masterpiece
On a cool gray March 14th afternoon the monthly Music Healing Ministry Music Concert successfully presented another Recital. Ms. Carla Wesby, Soprano sang Classical and Broadway tunes to the accompanyment of Ms. Nobuko Amemiya on piano.

Ms Wesby, currently earning her Masters of Music in vocal performance at the Manhattan School of Music, started with presentations of the works of W. A. Mozart and Claude DeBussy. After a brief intermissions she continued with works by Felix Mendelssohn, Aaron Copeland, G.C. Menoti, Harold Rome and Harvey Schmidt. Hers is a wonderful talent that is a pleasure to listen to in a fine acoustic setting.

St. Jacobi and the audience was very happy to have such talents both in voice and on keyboard to warm the afternoons chill. We look forward to hearing great things of Ms. Wesby and wish her and Ms. Amemiya in their future careers.

Wood/Moran Duo Thrills Audience
The first concert for the Community for the new year featured the WOOD/MORAN DUO. Held on a very cold second Sunday in January, in our slightly chilled performance space, the performance was warmly received.

Mr. Liam Wood and Mr. Benjamin Moran were once again wonderful on their acustic guitars. Giving over an hour of primarily Spanish style pieces with a warmth and fullness that kept everyone attuned to the fine music. Music that was written by John Johnnnson, Fernando Sor, Roland Dyens, Enrique Granados and Astor Piazzolla.

This was followed by light refreshments in Friendship hall. The audience had the chance to talk with the artists and personally express their apreciation for the day's performance.
.

Organ for a November Concert
It was a sunny but cold November Sunday. Inside the Organ was warming up the audience. The November Music Healing Ministry Concert was one that warmed the heart and helped the spirit.

Mr. Gregory Eaton, Organist and Music Director at the Church of St. Ann and The Holy Trinity at Clinton & Montague Streets in downtown Brooklyn was at the keyboard for the November Concert. Mr. Eaton had a program of 19th & 20th Century music that was just what a cold day needed. Wonderful artistry evoked an encore by a very appreciative audience.

Afterwards fresh baked fudgbrownies and other light fare was the order of business as audience and performer mingled for refreshments. We at St. Jacobi are thankful for the talent of Mr. Eaton and the time given for the presentation of this month's concert. We look forward to the coming events.
