Florists, greeting card manufacturers, and candy makers rejoice; Valentine's Day is coming! It may not be the biggest holiday for these businesses, but it must rank way up there. It is nice though to remember those we love the most in a special way for Valentine's Day and other special days. Special treats and special remembrances help to keep the relationship special. It would be nice to remember the original St. Valentine commemorated on February 14 and how he helped young couples in love. Unfortunately, there were at least 14 men named Valentine commemorated as Saints in one place or another, several of them commemorated on February 14, and none of them especially connected with romance or couples. The legends and romantic association apparently were invented in the Middle Ages.
With Christmas we have St. Nicholas, and we know quite a bit about him and how the stories grew; with St. Valentine, not so much. But that need not take away the special place that Valentine’s Day holds. God wants us to love one another, and He wants us care about each other. Usually He also has a special someone in mind for us to care about and love. Remembering them on special days, birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas give us occasions to show our love and caring.
But all the flowers, candy and cards cannot make up for everyday neglect. Everyday courtesy and caring, the little things which we daily do and say, say I love you in ways that cannot be mistaken. They may not be as spectacular as a bouquet of roses and a big box of chocolates, but they do nourish love well.
God also loves us deeply and shows it in big ways and small. His biggest gift of love was His Son Jesus, born to be our Savior. He continues to give Himself to us in Holy Communion, and speaks to us through His word, the Bible.
Occasionally He intervenes in people's lives in a major way and we call it a miracle. We read about those in the Bible. We perhaps see them when someone recovers from illness or injury much better than expected, or escapes serious harm in a bad accident. Sometimes the events in life come together in a way that seems much too good to be simple coincidence. Luck, it has been said, is God when He doesn't sign His name.
More often, God blesses us through the ordinary means which He put into this world. These include the gifts and abilities that He gave each of us. At the wedding at Cana, Jesus miraculously turned water into wine. God continues to perform this same miracle every year. He just runs the water through a grape vine as a part of the process. Jesus was in a hurry and took a short cut. But He is still the one who created the grape vine and gave the vintners their talent.
God's hand is at work in the ordinary, everyday blessings of life. Just as it's not a good idea to take one's spouse for granted, we shouldn't take God for granted either. We need to remember the small blessings God gives us every day, as well as the big ones. These are easily overlooked and taken for granted, but these too are signs of His love and care.
We may not be celebrating Saint Valentine this February 14th, but we do celebrate the love that God has given us, and the love we have for each other. Especially we can celebrate the special love we have for the special people in our lives. That’s a good thing.
Let’s also celebrate the love that God has shown us and the love we have for Him. Be God's valentine! His love enriches your life as His forgiveness cleanses you from sin day by day. Be one of God's valentines to the world, letting His love show in what you say and do.
