St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, St. Clair MichiganThe history of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church dates back to the very beginning of Lutheranism in St. Clair County, Michigan. In the early 1850’s, Lutherans were scattered throughout this entire vicinity, but were like sheep without a shepherd. In 1857, Reverend Tritschel, of Detroit, held the first Lutheran service in Marine City, Michigan. The Lutherans of St. Clair were also invited to this service. The service was so highly regarded that the reverend was invited back to St. Clair to hold a similar service, which he did.
In November of 1857, through the efforts of Reverend Tritschel, a Reverend A. Ch. Bauer was called as the pastor of Marine City, St. Clair and surrounding vicinity Lutheran Churches. In 1860 Reverend Bauer resigned his charge in Marine City and became the exclusive pastor of the St. Clair congregation. In 1861 the congregation purchased an old log house at the corner of 7th and Jay Street, with a half lot, for $200.00, which became our first church and parsonage. At that time, St. Peter’s congregation consisted of 28 members. Today, (2002 figures) there are 532 baptized members of St. Peter’s.
