A Christian Church
We preach, teach, and confess Jesus Christ, the crucified, as the only true God and Saviour of mankind. "I am determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." (1 Corinthians 2:2)
A Trinitarian Church
This crucified Christ is the only-begotten Son of the Father, conceived by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary. This same Holy Spirit is at work today in the preaching of Christ to make all believers in Christ adopted as sons of the Father. (Galatians 4:4-6)
An Historic Church
This faith has been reliably handed down to us today through the Holy Christian Church as witnessed by the ancient Creeds. Jude, the Apostle, urges us to persevere in this faith and not look for another: "contend earnestly for the faith which was once, for all, delivered to the saints" (Jude 3). The Scriptures of the prophets and apostles (which are the only pure rule and norm of doctrine) testify that this is the same faith of believers of all times and of all places.
A Lutheran Church
This ancient faith was reiterated and defended against later errors in the Reformation of the 1500s, led by Martin Luther. We are fully committed to deciding all matters of faith and life according to this one, holy, Christian and apostolic faith which is faithfully set forth in the Creeds and the Confessional writings of the Lutheran Church. "Hold fast the pattern of sound words, which you have heard from me," writes St. Paul in 2 Timothy 1:13.
An Evangelical Church
The Gospel (Evangel) is the very heart of the Church. Even as Jesus Christ is the beginning, end and middle of all our preaching and teaching, so also, it is His life, His death and His work wherein lies man's only hope. Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through Me." (John 14:6)
A Sacramental Church
Since Christ and His work is man's only hope, He was content, not only to suffer death on the cross for the sins of the world, but He continues to speak and act in His Church to bring people to faith in Him. For this purpose He instituted the Office of Preaching and Sacrament. Here God Himself is at Work today to distribute His blood-bought salvation. This is so important that Jesus testifies, "Truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). And, "Truly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you" (John 6:53).
A Liturgical Church
In order that God's word and work might be extolled--and not our own--we make use of the Church's historic liturgy which has served the Christian faith through thousands of years and hundreds of cultures. An order of service, an altar, vestments, crucifix, candles, fine music and appointed lessons and collects all serve to direct our attention to God's preaching and Sacraments while adding life and dignity to worship. Even as Paul writes, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord" (Colossians 3:16).
A Loving Church
"Love one another, as I have loved you," says Jesus to His disciples. Following our Savior's lead, and in the strength of the Holy Spirit, we open our hearts to all who enter here and those we meet during the week. For we firmly believe as Jesus says, "If someone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?" (1 John 4:20). Our love is shown primarily in this: that we are committed to making the pure Word of Christ available to all in our community.
