St. John Lutheran adheres to the practice of "close communion." That is, we limit participation to those who are members of the like faith with us.It is presumed that those who are members of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) have expressed such a faith at the time they were confirmed or at their first communion. We ask those fellow Christians who are not members of the LCMS to kindly examine their beliefs in light of the remainder of this tract and join us at the altar only if they honestly and conscientously share our beliefs.
Holy Communion is a gift from our Lord Jesus Christ. It assumes that God has forgiven our sins, it strengthens our faith, and it unites us with our Savior in a unique and wonderful way. Because it is His gift and we are called to faithfully administer it, we should be aware of His teaching on this meal.
The Bible tells us that Jesus offered this meal to believers in Him (Matthew 26:17-31). Further, He also teaches that He is present in the meal (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). Also, the Bible warns us to partake of this in a worthy manner and that we need to be able to examine ourselves honestly in terms of our beliefs concerning the Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11:27-29).
Based on this understanding from these and other Bible passages, we would kindly ask you to examine yourself using following questions:
1. Have I been instructed in the Ten Commandments, and in light of those, believe that I am a sinner and deserved God's wrath?
2. Am I truly sorry for my sins?
3. Do I agree with the teaching of the apostles' Creed and believe in the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ died for me and shed His blood on the cross for the forgiveness of my sins?
5. Do I desire, with God's help, to confirm my life to God's Word?
6. Have I been instructed in the Lord's Supper and believe that the true body and blood of Christ are present in the bread and wine in this meal for the forgiveness of sin?
If God has lead you to answer "yes" to all of these questions, He offers you a rich blessing in this meal and we welcome you to our altar. Please indicate your desire to attend Communion when you fill out the pew registry.
If you are unclear about any of these issues, or must honestly answer "no," to some of these questions, we encourage you to wait and please speak to Pastor before the next opportunity for Communion.
Thank you for worshipping with us. We are glad you are here! God bless you!
