In 1884 a group of German pioneer families settled in Rush Township of JoDaviess County, where they worshipped in a church near their farms. In 1890 they began holding services in the Stockton school and in 1894 built their first church.. In 1920 the church was rebuilt after partially destroyed by fire. The current church, built on the corner of Routes 20 and 78, was occupied in 1950. The old church is currently the Hermann Funeral Home. Over the years Christ Lutheran has had a close relationship with Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa and has frequenlty been served by students. Two young men of the church have become Lutheran pastors. Christ Lutheran was originally affiliated with the American Lutheran Church and became part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988.

In 1894 the congregation decided to build it's own house of worship and the church was dedicated October 7, 1894. Pastor A. Hoyer of Lena served through the period of construction, 1893-1896. |

 The cornerstone ceremony for the new Lutheran Church was held on June 19, 1949. Work continued on the church throughout the winter and the church was dedicated in October 1950 at its present location. |

In January, 1950, workers were able to finally enclose the new Lutheran church so that they could continue the interior work through the winter. The structure was dedicated in October 1950 at its present location. |
