Shepherd’s Center, a respite day center for those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia, is very active at Good Shepherd. We have approximately 20 volunteers who assist us in cooking meals, playing music, and working at our center with our participants. Several of our volunteers from Good Shepherd include Candace Fralix, Linda Gilgen, Faye & Charles Rister, Cleo Gartner and WELCA. The Brookdale Foundation is continuing to support Shepherd’s Care by sending ongoing educational news for the staff and invites the director and activities director every other year for an intensive three day conference. The community supports our center by sending donations throughout the year and also by attending our major fund raiser, the Pig Pickin’ held in October. Our church contributed all loose change from the offering to our cause during 2007. As of January 2008 we have 10 participants and plan to expand from 1 day per week to 2 days early in 2008. Due to the continued dedication and love shown by our church and the community we are continuing to successfully deliver our program to those in the Walterboro area.Respectfully submitted, Virginia Bullard, Director Nina Crosby, Assistant Director Sue Nussman, Activities Director shepherdscarerespite@yahoo.com Shepherd’s Care Adult Respite Center, a ministry of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, is the only social day center for people with Alzheimer’s Disease and other memory loss in Colleton County. Initiated in 2003, the Center provides participants with meaningful social interaction, mental stimulation, therapeutic activities and a home-cooked meal in a safe environment while their caregivers receive a much-needed break. The Center also welcomes volunteers from all denominations, who provide one-on-one, on-sight interaction with participants and meal preparation.
