The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, commonly called Redeemer Lutheran Church, was founded in 1890. At the 85th Anniversary celebration of the church founding, we affirmed our faith with the following words:"We trust the Spirit to help us find ways to minister to the needs of the people in the city, through the Lutheran Social Action Conference, and other organizations in which we participate, with housing, clothing, providing emergency food to those in need; to assist in the struggles of the dis-advantaged for equality and justice; in giving new meaning and new hope to the lives of the elderly through the Senior Center; to give opportunity for expression in the life of the Church through the Campus Ministry; to help our youth to find the real meaning of faith and life in service to others; and to find ways for peace and concord in our distressed and divided nation and world."
We still remain faithful to the core of this Baptismal Affirmation thirty-five years later, although the means and emphasis of our mission have undergone change. Our ministry programs now include the Frank Zeidler Center for Public Discussion, the Connections Senior Center and the Coffee House.
On April 22, 2007, the congregation met to discern the future ministries of the church. We voted to transform ourselves and our ministry and explore what it means to be the church in this postmodern era.
