About Holy Spirit, Leonia NJ |
A merger of Missouri Synod and Lutheran Church in America congregations founded Holy Spirit Church in 1970. At Holy Spirit you will find people of all ages, diverse backgrounds, and nationalities. In addition to activities and worship at church, Holy Spirit participates in a variety of denominational, interfaith, and community events and services. We believe that Jesus Christ came for all nations and people, and is the central figure of faith. In the congregation and in the broader community we celebrate common concerns, hopes, and dreams while affirming the blessings and gifts God has given. As a congregation gathered around Word and Sacrament, the Good News of our crucified and risen Lord Jesus Christ guides all that we are and do. We believe that knowing Christ changes perspective, encourages good relationships, and guides understanding of how life is to be lived in the world. Our faith understanding is rooted in Biblical teachings, the Lutheran Confessions, and Reformation tradition.
Holy Spirit Lutheran Church is a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), New Jersey Synod, Meadowlands Mission Cluster. We enjoy relationships with various Lutheran, ecumenical, and interfaith groups at the local, regional, and national levels, including the Bergen County Council of Churches and Leonia Council of Churches and Synagogues. Holy Spirit supports an Ecumenical Youth Group, Good Friday Walk, Summer Vacation Bible School, and Community Thanksgiving Service. In addition, the congregation hosts a Boy Scout Troop, Girl Scout Troop, Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Holy Fire Presbyterian Church, English As A Second Language (ESL) classes, and mission project to Light & Life in Jesus Christ Church in the Philippines.
At the local and regional levels, the Church and Child Care Center Preschool contribute to Shelter Our Sisters (SOS), the Inter—Religious Fellowship (IRF), the Shelter for the Homeless of Bergen County, and Center for Food Action (CFA). At the national and international levels, the Church and Child Care Center Preschool participate in disaster relief and support of the wider mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the New Jersey Synod, Meadowlands Mission Cluster of churches, and several other special programs during the year.
We encourage friends and members of the congregation to use interests, gifts, and talents in the ongoing work to further God’s kingdom in the world. There are a number of committees on which people are welcome to serve, as well as activities in which people are welcome to attend.
