In the early part of January, I conducted a worship service at Crane's Mill in West Caldwell. To begin the message, I asked the question, "Do you feel that life is fair?" In reply, those present resoundingly answered, "NO!"Frankly, that resopnse took me aback. Without a doubt, many people would consider themselvs extremely blessed to reside in such a facility with its many conveniences. Indeed, afterwards, talking to one of the residents, there was also an admission of surprise at the sentiments of her compatriots. "I would think that we here are more insulated from life's dissapointments," she said.
To my way of thinking, there's a lesson to be learned from this little opinion survey. The response of those at the worship service strikingly indicates that material blessings and a comfortable life style are not sufficient to best withstand the vicissitudes of life upon one's health and welfare. Rather, another layer of insulation is necessary to provide an adequate shield against the cold night of worldly trials.
Indeed, this is precisely what Peter offers and proclaims in the first verses of his epistle! To beleaguered saints through the ages, there is reminder of the inestimable treasure bequeathed upon them by the Almighty. They are the blessed recipients of the shield of God's power which is theirs to clasp by faith as they are covered by teh righteousness of Christ, our Redeemer.
Here is the insulation, the cushion, the bubble that enables the homeless as well as the Crane's Mill resident to withstand what is unfair. This faith ushers God's grace and peace into our lives which allow us to rise above our earthly circumstances.
Do you still see life as unfair? May your faith be so strengthened by Word and Sacrament and devotion in this coming new year that like a young eaglet you rest content shielded under the wings of your eternal, all-powerful God.
Epiphany blessings,
Pastor Ramirez
