The “Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran
Congregation in Nicollet County”
was organized by 33 charter families
on June 6,1858.
The congregation was known as
Nicollet Lutheran Church. This was the
congregation’s name until it was changed
to Norseland Lutheran Church in 1957.
The first resident pastor of the congregation
was the Rev. Thomas Johnsen who served 1863-1907.
He served an area of seventeen counties in
Minnesota and Iowa. It has been said that
eventually fifty congregations were formed from
his field of labor.

The congregation was divided three times due to size
and distance. It continues to be served today as a dual
parish together with Norwegian Grove Lutheran Church
of rural Gaylord.

Divine Services were held in homes and schoolhouses
until a church building was constructed in 1866.
In 1884, the church building was enlarged and a steeple
was added. After forty-six years, the old church building
was replaced. The current church building was dedicated
on Reformation Day in 1911. The bell was moved from the
old church along with the altar painting. The new altar,
pulpit and baptismal font were purchased in 1927.

The congregation conducted Christian Day School classes
at two different periods during her history. At the
opening of the Christian Day School, in 1930, Pastor
Gullerud said, “Thanks and praise to God alone.”

The first major remodeling of the church building came in
1974 when an entrance and office were added to the north-west
corner of the building. Two years earlier the weather-vane
on the steeple was replaced with a stainless steel cross.

The onset of the twenty-first century witnessed a number
of physical changes. A new Narthex was constructed during
the winter of 1996–97 which included an elevator and new
rest rooms.
