| Surat - Marriage Rites | | The wedding ceremony was in Raj's backyard. The square stage that hosted the ceremony has 4 pillars representing Hindu philosophy: truth, humanity, meditation, & purity, and also represent the 4 purposes of life (spiritual way of living, pleasures, economic obligations, and freedom from worldly bondage). The square stage was decorated with flowers/greens (even the net-like roof), all hand-made. The cloth-canopy (white and yellow) will be taken down after the wedding. The chandeliers were also hand made from flowers and greens. The groom (with face covered by a headgear) arrived on a horse. The groom was greeted by the bride’s family members with flowers. The bride’s mother pulled his nose to remind him of his forthcoming responsibility, and presented him with an earthen pot filled with curd, honey, ghee & cotton – he stepped on the pot accepting/facing the challenges that married life may bring. After the marriage ceremony came the rite of farewell to the bride (the most emotional ritual where the bride leaves her parents’ home and makes way to her husband’s). |
