Our History |
Norwegian Grove Lutheran Church was organized on February 1, 1881.Norwegian immigrants began to settle in Sibley County in 1855. Prior to the organization of the congregation, members had attended Services at Norseland Lutheran Church. The members living in the vicinity of the "Northern Grove" became Norseland Church District #5. In January 1881, the members requested that this district become a separate congregation. This was accomplished on February 1, 1881 at the home of Mrs. Jorgen Nerison. The congregation consisted of twenty families. |

Until a church building was erected, Services were held in the homes of the members. The first church building was constructed in 1884 in the site of the present cemetery. The tiny building was 20 feet by 30 feet in size. Already by 1899, there was discussion about repairing or enlarging the building. During the 1920s, the congregation realized the need for a larger and improved church building. A site was selected about six miles south of Gaylord, Minnesota on State Highway 22, about one-half mile east of the old site. The present church building was 30 feet by 46 feet in size and the estimated cost of construction was $6,000. The building was dedicated on October 20, 1929, just a few days before the stock market crash of 1929. | |

In 1966, a 22 foot by 30 foot addition was added to the building at a cost of $15,000. This included an enlarged Nave with the addition of four rows of pews, a new entrance and rest rooms. The Chancel of the church was redecorated in 1956,1978, and 2004. |
