Pastor's Welcome
One of the most frequent questions I receive as the pastor of this parish concerns the meaning of the word “Samhold.” “Samhold” is a Norwegian word that means “holding together.” In other words, “Samhold” in Norwegian means the same thing as “United” in English. This is important for us as we understand ourselves as Christians and Lutherans specifically. It is not uniformity in every detail of life that holds us together as Christians. It has nothing to do with being of the same mind on political issues. It has nothing to do with having the same interests. It is our common faith in Jesus Christ crucified and raised that holds us together, and it is in him that we put our trust for forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. In spite of our differences, we gather together as one in worship to receive God’s promises proclaimed to us and to receive the sacraments that our Lord Jesus Christ instituted in the Holy Scriptures: Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. As sinners in need of God’s grace, we come with empty hands to receive God’s promises through Jesus Christ, remembering in the final words of Martin Luther (1483-1546) that “we are beggars; this is true.”
