What is a chapter?  A chapter is a chartered local unit of Thrivent Financial that brings members together for charitable, social and educational activities.  All Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members belong to chapters, which enable them to aid their churches and others in their communities through voluntary actions.  This is accomplished through chapter Care programs.  There are three programs through which members may help facilitate funding for hands-on service and fund-raising activities:  Care in Congregations(TM), Care Abounds in Communities(TM), and Care in Regions(TM).

Care in Congregations is the program through which members receive financial support for hands-on service activities and fund-raising activities to help their Lutheran congregations or associate Lutheran entities (e.g., preschool, elementary school, high school, child care center, etc.)  This program's activities are administered by congregational coordinators who are focused on helping their congregation.  In order for Thrivent Financial to fund the activities, each church is required to have three congregational coordinators.

Care Abounds in Communities programs will provide funds to help Thrivent Financial members meet the needs of individuals, families or nonprofit organizations in their communities.  Through this program, financial support is provided for hands-on service activities and/or fund-raising activities.  In 2004, Thrivent Financial has committed $11,300 to the Arlington County Chapter for this program.

Care in Regions programs provide chapters with the opportunity to partner with other chapters and service teams in their region to address significant regional needs.

Chapter leaders manage the chapter; the legal entity required by law for all fraternal benefit societies, including Thrivent Financial. Chapter leaders are elected and may appoint additional optional advisory positions. They are responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership planning and administration support to the chapter and its congregational and community service teams. Chapter leaders approve funding for activities that benefit the community through the Care Abounds in Communities program.  All Thrivent Financial members have the option to be involved at both the congregational and the chapter level by volunteering to help meet pressing congregational or community needs. The articles in this newsletter will give you an idea of what can be accomplished by Thrivent Financial members working together.  If you have any questions,  Anne Kauzlarich or Sharon Brickhill would be happy to help you.  Their e-mail addresses are listed above.

FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH PROMOTES NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
By Carl Hoffman
Faith Lutheran Church, with the support of Thrivent Financial, celebrated The National Day of Prayer with a prayer, praise and song observance on Thursday morning, May 6, 2004. A breakfast of danish, bagels, orange juice, and good old Lutheran coffee was served at 6:45 AM. Faith's Pastor, John Bradford, gave a short message on " Can one be a Patriot and a Christian at the Same Time."  Bradford, a retired Marine
Corps officer, now a Lutheran pastor, also led the attendees in prayers for our country, its leaders, and its soldiers. Faith Church thanks Thrivent Financial for its support and encouragement of this event.

ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH FEEDS THE HOMELESS
By Marianne Hetzer
Advent's first Care Abounds in Communities project for 2004 supports the A-SPAN (Arlington Street People's Assistance Network) bagged meal program.  Once a month, Thrivent Financial members and friends gather to prepare 60 bagged meals for distribution to homeless folks in Arlington.  Volunteers of all ages participate in this activity; the only requirement is clean hands!  Congregational coordinators at Advent are recruiting new Thrivent members via personal letters of invitation.  Recently, Chapter operating funds helped to purchase Thrivent Financial paper products and tickets to Luther:  The Movie.

THANK YOU FROM ADVENT
"To the Leadership Board of Thrivent's Arlington County Chapter:  Thank you for your recent gift of $400 to Advent for our use in promoting Thrivent Financial within our congregation.  A portion of these funds will be used to sponsor a social hour on Chapter Board election day in October.  In addition, we have purchased Thrivent Financial merchandise to distribute to current and new members of Thrivent Financial."

HAPPY HATS
By Marianne Hetzer
Thrivent Financial members and friends of all ages celebrated Join Hands Day in June by assembling “Happy Hats” for critically ill children in Arlington hospitals.  Two hat-making sessions were held on Sunday evenings:  on the 13th at Our Savior Lutheran, and on the 20th at Faith Lutheran.  A light supper was served at each event.  “Happy Hats” kits were purchased (with funding from Thrivent Financial) from Glories/Happy HATS, Inc. a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting children suffering from serious illness, while promoting community service, especially among youth.  Join Hands Day is a national volunteer service day, usually celebrated on the 1st Saturday in May -- although any day is a good day to Join Hands with friends of all ages to brighten the life of others.
