Celebrate JOIN HANDS DAY at American Cancer's Society's RELAY FOR LIFE

We're looking for great people of all ages to JOIN HANDS to raise money to fight cancer at Relay For Life of Arlington!  We need at least 10 team members (everyone “counts”, including children and youth).  The event begins Saturday, June 24 at 3pm and continues through Sunday, June 25th at 6:30am at Thomas Jefferson Community Center.

Each team member is asked to raise at least $10 (yes, that’s all) in donations and walk or run at least one lap (yes, that’s all) at the event.  It would be great if each team member could raise $100 and commit to walk for at least one hour (not all at one time).

WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) National Signature Activity.  The Relay is an overnight walk-a-thon (because cancer never sleeps) to raise money to fight cancer and to raise awareness of cancer in the community.  The event honors survivors and those currently battling cancer, and remembers those who have lost their lives to cancer. Visit ACS at www.cancer.org for more information.
WHAT IS JOIN HANDS DAY?
Join Hands Day is a nationally recognized day of volunteer service, endorsed by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  What makes JOIN HANDS DAY unique is its emphasis on involving volunteers of all ages, gathered together to serve.  Thrivent Financial provided $1,000 in seed money for Join Hands Day which will be used to purchase food, decorations and other supplies for the Relay campsite.

BETHANIA KIDS CHALLENGE

Bethania Kids Ministries in India serves over 600 children in three orphanages, six care centers and two centers for disabled children.  The recent tsunami left hundreds more children without homes or families; Bethania is responding by building two additional orphanages in Chennai and Kodaikanal and three additional Kids Centers along the coast.  All of the Bethania board members and most of the caregivers in India are Lutheran.  The Mid-Atlanic Region of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has issued a challenge to its chapters to raise $100,000 for Bethania Kids by October 28 (which is National Make a Difference Day).  In honor of the chapter that raises the most funds by December 31, Thrivent Financial will award a $5,000 grant to Bethania Kids and the chapter will be recognized by name at the orphanage dedication in 2007.  The Arlington Chapter donated all net proceeds ($323) from our Member Picnic last October to Bethania Kids.  Every dollar donated to Bethania goes directly to the children.  All overhead expenses are borne by the board members.  Watch for more information on how our chapter will respond to this challenge in the coming months.

IF WE HAD A HAMMER . . . WAIT, WE WILL . . . ON MAY 20!

On Saturday, May 20, Arlington County Chapter volunteers will help Jewel Childs and her son, Perry, build their new home at 55th and Clay Streets, NE as part of THRIVENT BUILDS WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY.  We are assisting the DC Chapter in this project by providing human-power and lunch for the volunteers on May 20, as well as financial contributions.  The DC Chapter is responsible for recruiting all volunteer workers, and raising $16,000 (10 percent) of the total construction costs (Thrivent Financial and Habitat for Humanity provide the remainder).  Ms. Childs is contributing 300 hours of "sweat equity" toward her new home as well.

The Arlington County leadership board invites all chapter members (age 16 and over) to volunteer for "duty" on May 20.  Contact Rich Kauzlarich at rkauzlarich@cox.net if you would like to help at the build site.  No construction experience is necessary -- there are jobs for all ability levels!

Additionally, the leadership board encourages the Congregational Coordinators at each church to conduct a special fundraising appeal on Thrivent Awareness Sunday (April 23) for donations to the DC Chapter for their share of the construction expenses.  Checks should be made payable to Arlington Co Chapter Thrivent Financial.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH

Advent members and friends continue to prepare 60 bagged meals each month that are distributed by A-SPAN (Arlington Street People's Assistance Network).  The expenses for food and other supplies are paid by Thrivent Financial through Care Abounds in Communities® funding provided by the Arlington Chapter.  Later in the year, the congregation hopes to sell at least $1,000 worth of items from the Metro DC Synod (ELCA) Gifts of Hope catalog.  The Arlington County Chapter has approved up to $1,000 of supplemental funds, to double the amount of gifts purchased.  Using Care in Congregations® supplemental funds, Advent is completing a much needed waterproofing and landscaping project.  On Thrivent Awareness Sunday, April 23, Advent's Thrivent Congregational Coordinators will host the social hour and display the numerous benefits available to Thrivent members.  Advent is proud to report that 25 percent of congregation members are also Thrivent members!
