| Join Hands Day Service Event A Success! |
On May 3, 2008, tens of Arlington County Chapter members and other volunteers participated in the Arlington County Chapter's Join Hands Day event. Every week, hundreds of pounds of crops in nearby fields get "turned under" when harvesting them is too labor intensive not commercially worthwhile to bring to market. To avoid this waste, The Mid-Atlantic Gleaning Network (MAGNET) works with local farmers to arrange for these crops to be harvested and distributed to food banks.
Tens of volunteers assembled at Our Savior Lutheran Church and assisted the MAGNET with their efforts. Youth groups from Arlington's Lutheran churches were dispatched to a local field for harvesting. At the same time, others remained at Our Savior and sorted and bagged over 10,000 pounds of sweet potatoes that MAGNET had previously gleaned from fields in North Carolina.
At the end of the day, MAGNET delivered the sorted and bagged sweet potatoes to the Arlington Food Assistance Center in Shirlington. AFAC kept and distributed much of the bounty, sharing the remainder with a food assistance center in Fairfax County.
