| Oktoberfest Raises $2,180 for Arlington Food Assistance Center |
On Sunday, October 26, 2008, the four Lutheran churches in Arlington came together for an Oktoberfest, held at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Throughout the afternoon, those in attendance had the opportunity to participate in an Oktoberfest quiz, a beer stein judging competition, and polka lessons. Bratwurst, hot dogs, pretzels, root beer, sauerkraut, and homemade German potato salad were served, along with delicious deserts courtesy of Advent Lutheran Church. $1,090 was donated, and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans supplemented $1,090, for a total of $2,180. The monies were sent to Arlington Food Assistance Center, to help those who cannot otherwise purchase food for their families. The Arlington County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans hopes to repeat this activity in October, 2009. Watch your newsletter for details!
| Arlington Lutheran Churches Donate Over 500 Boxes of Cereal to Arlington Food Assistance Center |
During the months of July through October, 2008, the four Arlington Lutheran churches held a “competition” to see which congregation could collect the most number of cereal boxes for Arlington Food Assistance Center. While there was no prize for the congregation with the most boxes of cereal, the reward was the joy of giving to others in need. Cereal is one of the items most needed by Arlington Food Assistance Center, and your Arlington County Chapter was glad to support AFAC in this way. Special thanks to the Vacation Bible School of Our Savior Lutheran Church, and a special project by Advent Lutheran Church (which used Thrivent funds to purchase additional boxes of cereal) for their large donations.
