Four-Month Long Cereal Drive for Arlington Food Assistance Center
From May through August, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans teamed with Arlington's four Lutheran Churches to collect cereal for the Arlington Food Assistance Center located in Shirlington. AFAC serves over 900 households per week with supplemental food. Each Arlington Lutheran Church participated in Thrivent's cereal drive for a month, as follows: May - Advent Lutheran Church - 120 boxes of cereal!
June - Our Savior Lutheran Church - 200 boxes of cereal!
July - Faith Lutheran Church - ***
August - Resurrection Lutheran Church - ***
In total, at least 320 boxes of cereal were delivered to AFAC by the end of the summer. (At the time of press, we had not yet received the totals from Faith and Resurrection. We will report these in the next newsletter.) Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2009 Cereal Drive.
Arlington County Crop Walk - Saturday, October 17, 2009
ARLINGTON COUNTY CROP WALK 2009 will take place on Saturday morning, October 17, 2009. CROP WALK is a community-based response to hunger sponsored by Church World Service. Walkers raise money to combat hunger throughout the world by obtaining pledges and donations from friends, neighbors and co-workers. Twenty-five percent of all moneys raised through the Arlington County CROP WALK will be donated directly to the Arlington Food Assistance Center. Additional information about the CROP WALK program and how funds are used may be obtained from www.cropwalk.org . Plan on being one of Chapter's CROP Walkers! We will be walking with scores of other walkers from other congregations throughout Arlington County. Plan to meet at 8:00 am , October 17th at Arlington Forest United Methodist Church, 4701 Arlington Boulevard. The course is a 10K distance (~6.2 miles), and it is an easy walk. The topography is relatively flat. The walk will begin and end at Arlington Forest United Methodist, and there will be two check points along the way at St. George's Episcopal and Trinity Episcopal where restrooms and refreshments will be provided.
Relay for Life a Huge Success!
Relay For Life team members raised $2,650 ,and the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Arlington County Chapter contributed another $1,000 (through supplemental funds) toward research, education and patient services carried out by the American Cancer Society. Our celebration, Relay For Life 2009, occurred on June 21 – 22 at Wakefield High School where we gathered to walk or run from 5pm until 8am the following morning. Team members represented all four Arlington churches and included several cancer survivors. Our team’s popular on-site fundraiser, the lap-counting necklace, was a best-seller again this year, raising about $250 of our total. Wonderful weather contributed to the joyful atmosphere shared by hundreds of Relayers as we walked, chatted, played games, ate snacks and (in a few cases) napped during the 15-hour event. Once again, the luminaria ceremony, including a slide show of loved ones and hundreds of candles lighted to illuminate the track was the most poignant experience of the event. If you have not Relayed before, consider joining the team in 2010.
