In June of 2010, a devastating wind storm ripped through the Coulter Cemetery, toppling trees, turning and knocking over headstones. The damaged grounds were in need of extensive repair. On Join Hands Day, Saturday, May 7, 2011, Franklin County Thrivent for Lutherans joined hands with 65 volunteers at the Coulter Cemetery. Thrivent members from surrounding areas along with Mayor, Jim Warwick, members of the Coulter City Council, Coulter Fire Department, Northwest Franklin and Marion Monarchs 4-H Clubs, friends, family and residents from Sheffield, Dows, Alexander, Hampton, Latimer, and Coulter, came together to help restore the Coulter Cemetery to its original beauty.
On Join Hands Day, the entire grounds were raked and weeded, headstones were restored and re-centered, holes from downed trees were filled, flowers were planted and areas were re-seeded. Shrubs and fifty-two trees were planted, mulched and watered in order to replace those destroyed.
The Coulter Cemetery received $350.00 from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans after Shirley Knudsen, Advocate from Nazareth Lutheran Church, Coulter, answered a request from the Franklin County Board to develop and submit a project that would bring youth and adults together for a good cause.
Additional donations have made it possible for Coulter to continue restoring their cemetery back to its original beauty. A new cemetery plot guide with a Lexan polycarbonate resin cover has been purchased. The new signage will help visitors locate headstones.
"Coulter has been re-energized by the kindness and commuinity spirit of this event." Pam Warwick, President/Secretary of the Coulter Cemetery said. "We have been truly blessed!"
