|Dubuque County Receives Chapter of Excellence Award|The Dubuque County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has for the second consecutive year been awarded the Chapter of Excellence Award. We can be very proud of receiving this award as we were among the top FOURTEEN Thrivent chapters across the country who were named recepients of this award.
This award recognizes all individuals of the Dubuque County Chapter who joined together to strengthen our community by planning and participating in outreach activities during the past year.
Our chapter earned this award which also comes with a $700 bonus for future use, by meeting nine areas of criteria set by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. These goals were achieved through participation in fundraising events, educational seminars, and social events in our congregations and community. Numerous non profit organizations, needy individuals and our congregations benefited from all the projects completed in 2010.
The 2010 leadership board consisted of Ron Schardt, President, Galen Thomas, Vice President, Linda Chmelar, Records Director, John Cocayne, Community Service Team Director, Dennis Rice, Financial Director, Richard Hyman, Assistant Financial Director, Cindy Recker, Thrivent Builds Representative, Mark Beard, Youth Director, Freda Winkel, Director of Congregational Advocates and Charlotte Tigges, Communications Director.
We are always open to suggestions for future projects to aid and strengthen our community in any way possible. Contact one of the chapter leaders with ways we can help our community better serve its members.

|Congregational Advocates Training Seminar|
On March 21, 2011 a congregational advocates training seminar was held at Lord Of Life Lutheran Church, Asbury, Iowa. The session was led by Guin Jahnke, Dubuque County Director of Congregational Advocates. Participants received an information packet including resources and forms necessary to carry out their responsibilities of meeting the needs of their congregations. Advocates may plan an educational workshop, organize a fundraiser for a food pantry, or host a social event (picnic, confirmation dinner, etc).
Building a working relationship with the Thrivent Financial representatives is also an important role of the congregational advocates. Keeping the financial reps informed of new congregational members and events is a helpful tool in their positions.
Communicating upcoming events of the chapter to congregation members is another key function - even more so in 2011. Beginning this year, Thrivent is now charging local chapters for sending out newsletters and postcards to their members. The chapter mailing budget of approximately $570 annually will allow us to only send three mailings per year. Additional communication to members will be made by church newsletters and bulletins. We are also encouraging members to use the chapter website as events will be posted there also. Our great slate of congregational advocates will be very important to keep our chapter members informed.
|Thrivent Choice: An easy way to help support what matters to you|Thrivent Choice: An easy way to help support what matters to you
The Thrivent Choice program offers two ways members can recommend where to direct a portion of Thrivent Financial's charitable outreach funds.
1. Voting Events: All members (age 16 and older) can vote to help direct a portion of Thrivent Financial's charitable funds among a short list of national charities one to two times per year.
2. Choice Dollars: Eligible benefit members can help direct funds all year long to thousands of Lutheran nonprofit organizations like schools, camps, colleges – or even to their Lutheran congregations. Benefit members age 16 or older are eligible to participate in Choice Dollars if they:
Hold a Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership position; or
Have $800 or more in annual premiums of qualifying insurance products; or
Have $20,000 or more in contract value of qualifying products.
Member eligibility under current eligibility requirements is determined monthly, and these eligibility requirements are re-evaluated on an annual basis.
