Mount Baker Chapter, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans News
Welcome to our Newsletter! As a board we are pleased to produce our first 2006 Mt. Baker Chapter Newsletter! The Mt. Baker Chapter leadership team is eager to improve communication throughout our chapter, and as a result, this is this year's first edition mailed through the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Chapter mailing program. As with any new activity, we know that we will make improvements on our communication efforts, and we strongly encourage you, our many members, to provide us with input and feedback. Please contact any of the board members listed in this newsletter to offer your suggestions and requests for future newsletter articles. It is our goal to produce at least four chapter wide mailings each year, and at least two mailings to our wonderful congregational coordinators. We aim to improve chapter communication, highlight the many activities supported by our chapter, and share stories of success. With your continued prayers of support, the Mt. Baker Chapter Leadership Board will continue to serve you.

Experience an opportunity to improve our community while involving youth and having fun! The seventh annual JOIN HANDS DAY is on Saturday, May 6, 2006. This national day of volunteering sparks friendships among people of all generations as youth and adults come together to plan and conduct activities to improve their communities. We encourage you to participate in this special day, which is sponsored by America's Fraternal Benefit Societies, including Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and our members strongly support the purpose of this special day and the impact it has on communities nationwide. Last year, youth and adult members had a ball conducting more than 3,000 activities across the country. The ideas were limited only by the imagination.
This is the third Annual Join Hands Day at Camp Lutherwood Event! Bob Merrill, camp director, says many important projects are planned for this year with many special projects being planned for volunteer groups. Organize your group today and contact Bob! This is an excellent way to involve your youth and many outdoor loving members!
In 2005, eight of the 20 Award of Excellence activities chosen by JOIN HANDS DAY were conducted by Thrivent Financial members. The planning groups received $1,000 each to donate to a cause or use for this year's JOIN HANDS DAY activities.
How can you participate in 2006? It's easy. You'll find that the rewards of participating far outweigh the time and effort involved in planning an activity. And your chapter leadership board is here to help you along the way. Please call Bob at 360-734-7652 for more information.

Thrivent Financial Chapter Organizational Structure
The Mount Baker Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans provides leadership for the Lutheran churches in Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan counties. Currently we have 32 active congregations within this geographical area. Although we are uniquely challenged by our large geographical area, we have four counties, five islands, and even an international border to contend with, we are working hard to build a family of support for all our 3900+ Thrivent Financial members. Within the national Thrivent Financial organization, various geographical areas are identified as chapters. Each chapter consists of a chapter leadership board made up of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members, elected by members in the chapter. The board provides strategic direction, leadership planning and administration to support members and others who volunteer through one of Thrivent Financial's chapter Care programs (Care Abounds in Communities®, Care in Congregations® and Care in Regions®) or other chapter activities. Each chapter leadership board is comprised of five required elected positions. In addition, five optional elected positions, and a number of appointed advisory positions are available. If you are interested in becoming a board member, please contact our vice-president, Clarice Solvik. Clarice will assist you in becoming a part of our leadership team. Your chapter leadership board for this year is listed as a part of this newsletter. Please feel confident in contacting any board member with your questions, requests, or desire to participate in your chapter activities. We would love to have you become more involved, and welcome all Thrivent Financial members to participate as a board member, an appointed advisor, a congregational coordinator, or as a volunteer at any of the many events supported by our Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Chapter. All elected leadership board members have equal voting rights—the advisors do not vote in chapter leadership board matters. The chapter leadership board is responsible for allocating dollars to community service teams through the Care Abounds in Communities program. Please join us in this exciting process of service!
Congregational Coordinator Training Event
On March 18th many Mount Baker Chapter Congregational Coordinators came together for fun, fellowship, and learning! These dedicated Thrivent members spent their Saturday morning together learning about all the many opportunities for churches and communities utilizing Thrivent funds and networking. If your church was unable to send a representative team to this excellent event, but still want the many benefits of being well informed, please come to a chapter leadership board meeting or contact any chapter leadership board member.
This newsletter was written and edited by volunteer leaders of your local Thrivent Financial for Lutherans chapter to keep you informed of chapter news.
