Welcome to our Newsletter!
As a board we are pleased to produce our first 2007 Mt. Baker Chapter Newsletter! The Mt. Baker Chapter leadership team is eager to improve communication throughout our chapter, and as a result, this is this year's first edition mailed through the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Chapter mailing program. As with any activity, we know that we will make improvements on our communication efforts, and we strongly encourage you, our many members, to provide us with input and feedback. Please contact any of the board members listed in this newsletter to offer your suggestions and requests for future newsletter articles. It is our goal to produce at least four chapter wide mailings each year, and at least two mailings to our wonderful congregational coordinators. We aim to improve chapter communication, highlight the many activities supported by our chapter, and share stories of success. With your continued prayers of support, the Mt. Baker Chapter Leadership Board will continue to serve you. Chapter Officers Elected-More Needed Introducing your 2007 Chapter Leadership Board! We thank you for participating in the eighth annual JOIN HANDS DAY on Saturday, May 5, 2007. This national day of volunteering is sponsored by America's fraternal benefit societies, including Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, to generate awareness about the impact of grassroots volunteerism. It encourages youth and adults to come together to identify, plan and conduct activities to improve their communities. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and our members strongly supports the purpose of this special day and the impact it has on communities nationwide. Last year, youth and adult members conducted nearly 3,000 activities across the country. The ideas were limited only by the imagination.
You’ll find that the rewards of participating far outweigh the time and effort involved. Through the hard work of many Camp Lutherwood looks great! If you missed this year's Join Hands Day event and still want to help Lutherwood, it's never too late! Just contact the Camp and find out about the many ways you and your congregation can get involved. For more information contact: Bob Merrill at (360) 734-7652, or email Bob at bob.merrill@camplutherwood.org
Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County
Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity is a four-year, $105-million alliance between Thrivent Financial for Lutherans® and Habitat for Humanity® International designed to help provide a “hand up” to people who lack decent shelter. Thrivent Financial is a faith-based membership organization committed to helping its nearly 3 million members achieve financial security and give back to their congregations and communities. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing. This national program will see local benefits when Whatcom County Habitat for Humanity and the Mount Baker Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans complete more home in partnership with low-income families in the Paradise area.
The 312 homes Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans built in 2006 are in addition to the more than 5,000 homes Habitat affiliates build annually in the United States and represent a six percent increase in Habitat home production. Locally, Thrivent volunteer chapters and Habitat affiliates will help with fund-raising and homebuilding. Lutherans and Thrivent Financial members are needed to volunteer on the build site. Lockwood,Thrivent Builds Specialist at 360-380-4127, email:lockwood4kids@verizon.net or Habitat for Humanity-Whatcom County, or visit www.thriventbuilds.com to learn how to volunteer or donate.
Upcoming Events-Mark Your calendar today!
You're Invited! You are invited to help the United Blind of Whatcom County, a local chapter of the American Council of the Blind, provide Practical Assistance Kits to newly-blind people in our region. These kits will offer a selection of items that a visually impaired person might not know about and perhaps could not afford, such as a talking calculator. The way you can help is by attending the Ice Cream Social scheduled for Tuesday evening, July 17, 2007, between 7 to 9 p.m., when you can eat delicious Edaleen ice cream and listen to a live swing music duo. Held at the St. Luke's Health Education Center, 3333 Squalicum Parkway in Bellingham, Thrivent will provide some supplemental funds for this fundraiser, where you are requested to donate at least ten dollars per person. For advance tickets, phone Thrivent member Bruce Radtke at 360-733-7029 (answer machine) or Barb Crowley at 360-734-2798, and thank you!
