Mount Baker Chapter, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans News

Welcome to the Summer Edition of our 2008 newsletter.  We are pleased to continue providing information about upcoming events and items of interest to you.

Old Fashioned Summer Picnic

Please join us for our summer barbecue on August 30, 2008, at beautiful Lutherwood Camp and Retreat Center located on the shores of picturesque Lake Samish.  The entire campground will be open for our Thrivent members to enjoy.  This includes canoes, swimming, water games, volleyball, basketball and field games.  Of course, there are also wonderful trails to be explored.

This day is a celebration for Thrivent members and is in appreciation for all of the time and effort you give in your community and churches.  Our Thrivent members DO make a difference.  We are just finishing our second Habitat for Humanity house.  We have fed the hungry, assembled quilts and relief kits, and supported a community garden, community fundraising concerts, and Vacation Bible School, just to name a few.  This day is to celebrate YOU, our members.  There is no charge for this event - it is provided by our local chapter.  There will be no selling of products or fundraising pitches!

Organized games will begin at 2 p.m. with lots of cool prizes.  The entire barbecue dinner will be provided by your board and we will be eating at 4 p.m.  BBQ sandwiches, hotdogs, and chicken are all planned.  Salads, dessert and drinks will also be on the menu.

Although organized activities begin at 2 p.m., you are welcome to arrive as early as 10 a.m. to enjoy Lutherwood for the day.

***** It is important for us to have an accurate count in planning the meal.  Please contact Janet Congdon before August 20 if you will be attending.  Her phone number is 360-671-0906 or you may email her at rjcongdon@comcast.net *****

HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE!!

Just a Reminder about Your Care in Congregations Funds

Your board has noticed that many churches have not yet applied for their Care in Congregations funds.  This simple process must be initiated by your Congregational Coordinators for your church's use.  These monies must be applied for prior to your fundraiser or work project.  $1,300 or $1,600, depending on the size of the church, is waiting for your congregation.  Don't delay!!

Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity Update

Our Thrivent Builds Chapter Specialist, Al Peraino, has reported that the Skagit County project is coming right along.  The electrical is finished and the drywall is well on its way.  The exterior is also finished.  Lutheran labor is still needed on the home for Jose and Aracelli Soto and their two children Noe and Nancy.  If all goes according to plan, they will move in by Thanksgiving.  Please contact Al if you have time to spend working on this worthwhile project.  He can be reached at 360-424-5802 or email Al at peraino.ajm1@verizon.net.

Josephine Sunset Home - Salmon BBQ Fundraiser

Fir-Conway Lutheran Church invites you to their 2nd annual barbecue to benefit Josephine Sunset Home on August 22, 2008, at 5 to 7:30 p.m.  The BBQ will be held at the Harvey Wolden Farm near Conway, at 21162 Mann Road.  Deadline for ticket sales is August 15, although some tickets will be available the day of the barbecue.  Check with your church office for tickets, or call Mary Jo at Fir-Conway church (360-445-5396) or Marilyn Tangen (360-445-1012).  Tickets are $15.00 for adults, youth (5 to 11 years) $8.00, and children under 5 years free for this fabulous meal.  The menu will include barbecued salmon (sausage available as replacement), baked potato and trimmings, corn on the cob, cole slaw, beverage and cake.

Josephine Sunset Home is a skilled nursing care facility offering assisted living services, adult day services, Montessori preschool, and child care.  The focus for this year's fundraiser is the purchase of additional remote-controlled electric beds.  Being a Lutheran-owned non-profit, Josephine Sunset Home is eligible for the Thrivent Giving Plus program (www.Thrivent.com).  This fundraising event is supported by the Mount Baker and North Snohomish Thrivent Chapters through the Care Abounds in Communities program.
