Second Annual Old Fashioned Summer Picnic
Hurray!!      Summer is here!

It's time for family, vacations, gardening and especially the second annual Mount Baker Chapter’s Old Fashioned Summer Picnic.  There is no better way to celebrate than on the shores of beautiful Lake Samish at the Lutherwood Camp and Retreat Center.  The date is Saturday, August 29, 2009, from 2 until 6 p.m.

We will be serving a catered barbeque dinner at about 3 p.m. – everything will be provided by the Mount Baker Chapter of Thrivent.  Barbequed sandwiches, baked chicken, and hot dogs are all planned.  Salads, dessert, and drinks are also on the menu, so come and bring your appetite.

There will be games, prizes, swimming, volleyball, canoeing, a lot of conversation, and enjoying God’s creation in such a beautiful setting.  Last year’s picnic was a fun event for the over 200 members who attended, and we hope even more people turn out for this year’s picnic.

This is a day to celebrate our Thrivent members and all of the time and effort that you so willingly give to our communities and congregations.  Your efforts have helped raise money for Maple Alley Inn, Salvation Army, De Colores Multicultural Center, Josephine Sunset Home, and Lutheran Campus Ministry, to name a few.  Many of you are also involved in sewing quilts and making kits for Lutheran World Relief.  Now it's time to celebrate you and your labors in our Lord's kingdom.

Although organized activities begin at 2 p.m., you are welcome to arrive as early as 10 a.m. to enjoy Lutherwood for the day.  Hiking trails meander through the camp inviting exploration.  Sit by the lakeside and have a conversation with a neighbor or drop a fishing line in the water.  The canoes will also be available.

Once again this is purely a social event - there will be no selling of products or fundraising activities.

******* It is important for us to have an accurate count in planning the meal.  Please contact Janet Congdon before August 15, 2009, if you will be attending.  Her phone number is 360-671-0906 or you may email her at rjcongdon@comcast.net.  There is no need to respond if you cannot attend. *******

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!

Care in Congregations

This year all Lutheran congregations in our chapter have monies available to them to be used to further the ministry of their congregation.  The smaller congregations (under 500 members) receive $1,020.00 and the larger congregations (over 500 members) receive $1,250.00.  As of June, eight congregations still have not applied for these funds.  Contact your congregational coordinator or Karen Bellingar, Congregational Service Team Director, to see if your church is one of the eight.  Karen's job is to make sure that each congregation uses its available funds.  Her phone number is 360-303-1193.  Eleven other congregations have applied for only a portion of their money.  It's always a good idea to plan your fundraiser or work project early in the year to ensure receiving the entire amount.  Thrivent wants every congregation to receive all of their allotted funds

Quilting Event Postponed

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Mount Baker Group in Burlington had to postpone the quilt auction fundraiser that was scheduled in late June.  They are still planning to hold this event, hopefully in September.  Please watch for more information via newsletter or postcard.

Join Hands Day at Lutherwood

Join Hands Day was held at Lutherwood Camp and Retreat Center on May 2, 2009.  We had a great day of fellowship and work.  About 90 people attended and accomplished many projects including:
Installing exterior lighting on several buildings.
Putting a new metal roof on the boat house and painting it.
Tearing down the old entryway logs and removing rust from the old gate.
Tearing out the two old dock ramps.
Moving, splitting, and stacking about 5 cords of alder donated by neighbors Mike and Mary Hess.
Weeding the garden behind the dining hall.
Digging the power line ditch in preparation for the installation of power to the campground.
Trail building and clearing.
Installing new soap dispensers.
Finishing the girl’s bath house roof.
Removing the stationary picnic tables at the point.
Building an elevated walkway.
Painting the interior of the chapel.

As you can see we got lots and lots of work done, but we still have many projects left to do. Please consider volunteering for a weekend to help our continuing efforts to improve Lutherwood.  Many thanks to those who helped out before, on, and after Join Hands Day.

Two of our board members have served four years and will be leaving the board in 2010.  We invite any of you who are interested in serving on the board in 2010 to contact a current board member.  We are especially looking for persons from Skagit and/or Island Counties, as our continuing members are all from Whatcom County.  Serving on the Mt. Baker Chapter board is a privilege and a joy.  Our biggest “job” is to decide how our Care Abounds in Communities funds are granted.  If you are interested in helping give away thousands of dollars, this job is for you!  We also plan member events during the year and keep track of the Care in Congregations money.  If writing newsletters is your cup of tea, we've got a job for you!

The Mount Baker Chapter board meets on the third Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in the Fairhaven area.  Dinner is provided by our Thrivent Financial Representatives and expenses and mileage are reimbursed.  Visitors are always welcome.

Please pray for your board members and the work that they do.
