| Care Abounds in Communities™ |
This year our chapter dispersed support via volunteerism hours, matching funds, and unconditional grants to numerous projects. Projects ranged from book sales and bake sales to preschool construction projects and community cleanups. Thrivent projects help the community through your time and talents. The many hours of work that are donated are counted and valued. Mid King County Chapter thanks you for caring enough to partner in projects designed to meet or address community needs. Show you care for your community through an exciting Thrivent Financial program called Care Abounds in Communities™. Through this program, Thrivent Financial provides funding to support members like you who want to make a difference. Accessing supplemental funds for fund-raising efforts or funds to purchase supplies for hands-on service activities is easy through our chapter leadership board. Your first step is to form a community service team—a team of volunteers that conducts an activity to help individuals, families and/or qualified not-for-profit organizations. Then you can contact our chapter leadership board for more information and help.
| Stepping Stones to Learning |
A Service Team Project: Mid King County Chapter approved the reading program and library project for Holy Trinity Lutheran Preschool, entitled Stepping Stones to Learning, held October 17th and 24th. This program provides Learning Centers and reading books for young 3 and 4 year-old children.
A learning center consists of a table and chairs for young children where they listen to a book on tape or CD using headphones so they can follow along through the book while it is being read. Preschool books were purchased using a wish list prepared by the preschool director. Thrivent Financial members and participants attended this event held over two Sundays. Attendees purchased additional books to supplement library books so that each child at the listening center can use their own book.
Additionally, adults, teens, and children read books aloud and recorded the stories onto tapes. Teams of two worked together. While one person read aloud, the other person silently read along and made a sound with a musical instrument when it was time to turn the page, to indicate the command for the listening child to turn the page.
It was great fun... Mothers and sons, sisters and brothers, and fathers and sons all laughed and smiled as they read and listened to many wonderful stories. Everyone in the libary enjoyed the entertainment, and applauded at the end of the story. After the tapings, young children donned the headphones and listed to the stories. Green Eggs and Ham, Noah's Ark, The Purple Crayon, and many other books on tape were available for Listening Center use.
