Vacation with a Purpose

THRIVENT BUILDS WORLDWIDE – HUITE, GUATEMALA,  APRIL 18-26, 2009

In Guatemala, there is a need for 1.2 million houses. Currently, families live in huts or crowded in a small rented room, sometimes paying 3 or 4 times what they would for a new Habitat home.  Zacapa, Guatemala is one area that has seen a dramatic rise in poverty in the past five years, from 7% of the population in extreme poverty to 18.9%.  There is more need for housing every year.

You can make a difference in improving the living conditions of Guatemalan families through the construction of decent, low-cost houses.  We will be partnering with the Guatemalan Habitat for Humanity who has built over 25,000 homes since it’s inception in 1979.

We will be building new homes in the village of Huite, in eastern Guatemala , through the Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity Worldwide program. Teams will be working in a Habitat Colony that will eventually provide housing for seventy families in need of a decent home.  The main benefit of building Colonies is that they make it possible to give a family a more integrated housing solution by providing them with both land and a home.  This includes pre-installed community utilities which are usually harder to obtain in single home construction.

We are hoping to assemble ten teams of 10-15 people to participate in building in this new Colony of homes. Trip dates are April 18-26, 2009.  We are searching for individual volunteer workers.

Trip cost is $1150.00 plus round trip airfare to Guatemala City.  Benefit members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are eligible for a $500 grant from Thrivent to defray trip costs.  Airfare is estimated at $400.00 to $600.00.

NEW PLANS FOR A NEW YEAR ! 2009 IS HERE!

Many of us are looking at our calendars and marking down our plans for 2009.  We transfer the dates for annual events, mark the anniversaries and birthdays we want to remember, and add the important dates to remember from our church and school calendars.

When you make plans for your volunteer activities, remember that Thrivent wants to support you and your community by providing supplemental dollars for fundraisers, and project funds for supplies when you do a service project. Thrivent's Care Abounds in Communities and Care in Congregations programs are designed to help you accomplish more good with your volunteer hours.

Check out www.thrivent.com for a wide range of tools to help you plan, get additional volunteers, advertise, and accomplish your project.  Whether you are raising funds for a playground at your preschool, helping the youth at your church get involved in the community, doing yard work and home repairs for an elderly neighbor, or raising money to help pay unexpected medical expenses, Thrivent can help.  Please contact your Congregational Coordinator or any of your Mid King County Chapter Leadership Board listed below for information about what projects and recipients are eligible for supplemental funding.  Remember to apply for funding before you begin your project.
