2012 Care Abounds in Communities applications to be considered February 21st

Care Abounds in Communities applications will be considered at the first meeting of the Leadership Board and Congregational Advocates at Zion Lutheran Church at 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 21st, reports newly re-elected chapter president Marilyn Minchinton.

“By that time we hope to have the dollar amount available to the chapter for projects in 2012.  We like to approve projects early in the year so that project leaders can plan.”

Chapter members are encouraged to discuss potential projects with their Congregational Advocates who have experience in guiding projects through the approval process.  Members may get copies of the forms from their advocates to see the guidelines and requirements for the projects.

“We have had very good response in the past,” says Minchinton, “and are happy to say that all the 2011 Care Abounds in Communities projects were successfully completed!”  Chapter members and friends raised 100% of the funds needed to qualify for the maximum contribution from Thrivent.

The amount available to our chapter for Care Abounds in Communities in 2011 was $5,385.00, though many different conditions will influence the amount available in 2012.

Please see the list of Congregational Advocates elsewhere in this newsletter for contact information.  If you are a member of Thrivent and not a member of a local congregation, please contact any of the advocates or any of the Leadership Board members with your idea.

“The important thing is to have all applications completed in time to get them to me or the CAs in time for the meeting, ideally by February 1st,” urges Minchinton.  “Usually there are a number of applications so projects are generally approved at one meeting.”

Eligible recipients for the Care Abounds in Communities program are individuals, families, local communities or organizations that are exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  (This includes charitable, educational and religious organizations.)

Congregational Advocates are “ear-to-the-ground” in each congregation

Here’s a list of the Congregational Advocates you may wish to clip and place by your phone.  Each one has several years of experience, is familiar with the guidelines for projects, and welcomes your questions and suggestions.

November elections return incumbents, add new officer

The November 13th elections held during coffee hours in congregations last year returned incumbents to their offices but added a new office and name to the list.

Joe Hartley from Zion is the newly elected Community Service Team Director.  His role is to support community service teams by encouraging them to form and initiate activities to qualify for funding through the Care Abounds in Communities program, which supports individuals, families and qualified not-for-profit institutions.

He will play a significant role in working to increase member engagement and growth.
Welcome to Joe to the Leadership Board!  He has already served Zion as a Congregational Advocate so is experienced in the work of the chapter.

Members urged to check allocation of Choice Dollars

President Minchinton urges members to review their Thrivent Choice Dollars allocation for 2012.  “I was amazed to find out how much was allocated to Hope last year from members who had named Hope as the recipient of their Choice Dollars.”

Choice Dollars: Eligible benefit members can help direct funds all year long to thousands of Lutheran nonprofit organizations like schools, camps, colleges – or even to their Lutheran congregations. Benefit members age 16 or older are eligible to participate in Choice Dollars if they:

Hold a Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership position; or
Have $800 or more in annual premiums of qualifying insurance products; or
Have $20,000 or more in contract value of qualifying products.

Member eligibility under current eligibility requirements is determined monthly, and these eligibility requirements are re-evaluated on an annual basis.

Participation is simple and easy, without any complicated forms to complete. You'll be able to vote or direct Choice Dollars in a way that's convenient for you. Visit www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice or call 800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and say “Thrivent Choice” for more information.

Your Congregational Advocate will assist you personally or will provide a card with easy-to-use instructions.
