Clark County WA Chapter, 2nd Quarter, June 2009
Care Abounds In Communities (CAIC)

Our chapter approved 31 funding projects  through May 13th for a total requested of $26,536.   Many projects  are scheduled for the second half of the year and if all those approved through May 13th receive the amounts requested, there will be approximately $3,200 yet to be allocated to additional projects.

Many times these projects do not raise as much as the applied for amount leaving a small amount at the end of the year to disburse.   It's not too late to form a service team and plan an activity that benefits non-profit organizations or families other than congregations.   Requests should be submitted to Kathy White
and will be considered at the monthly chapter meeting.  Request forms can be found on the lutheransonline website under "Resources".

Youth Activities

On Friday and Saturday April 24th and 25th Clark County high school youth joined other Vancouver-area churches for a progressive lock in.  The event all started at Messiah Lutheran Church in Hazel Dell with games, a concert, and food. (The cops only got called once! because the band played too loud.) Then we travelled to Mt. View Ice Arena in SE Vancouver for two hours of ice skating and broomball.  From there we headed to the Orchards YMCA for the rest of the night to play basketball, volleyball, video games, climb the rock wall, go swimming and just hang out!  The morning wrapped up back at Messiah with breakfast and a devotion.  The youth were tired, but enjoyed the activities and fellowship.  Total we had over 80 youth and adults in attendance.

Join Hands Day

Thanks to Peter Berg for chairing the event this year, getting the wood pre-cut and drilled so that members were able to assemble the birdhouses and planter boxes quickly and easily.

Many thanks to the Friends of the Carpenter for offering their facility for this annual event.

We welcome your ideas for future years for this annual celebration of volunteering.    The ideas should include things appropriate for participation of all ages.

Elections - Looking for Candidates

It seems as if we just did this, but it's that time of year again to start thinking about elections for chapter positions.  We also have a few empty slots now if someone thinks they might be interested and wants to try it out for a few months.  You must be at least 16 years old and a Thrivent member of this chapter.

How often have you asked yourself, “What can I do to make a difference?” How often have you seen a need and said, “I wish I could do something to help!”  Thrivent Financial for Lutherans gives you an opportunity to make a positive impact in your community by getting involved with your Thrivent Financial for Lutherans chapter.  Contact Thea Weber or any of our chapter leaders for more information.

Habitat for Humanity Update

The project is ahead of schedule!  What a wonderful surprise.  Thanks to so many volunteers from our churches who picked a Saturday and rounded up workers to help.  This gives the regular workers a much needed break.

This project has gone so well and so under budget that Evergreen Habitat for Humanity has applied for a second home to be built.  While this won't be a "Thrivent" home, it will provide a wonderful addition.  This is such good news in these times of budget cuts and other unhappy news.

Have you checked out the "Restore"?  It's a great place to pick up items for your home remodel projects.  The inventory changes daily as donations arrive and are purchased.  Check often for anything from appliances to paint to wood.

Address of Restore 5000 E. Fourth Plain Blvd., Vancouver

Mark Your Calendars

OCTOBER 8th - ANNUAL CHAPTER  DINNER - Last year St. John hosted the dinner which is a fund-raising opportunity for the congregation.  We want to share the opportunity to host the dinner with all congregations in our chapter.  If your church is interested in hosting this October, contact Terry Hoyer.
2010 Election Ballots will be distributed at the dinner.  Other details are in the planning stages.

COMING in the FALL: Friends of the Carpenter, a faith-based group that works with building helpful relationships with the homeless and needy, will be having their annual dinner auction fundraiser. They have been approved for a Thrivent Regional Supporting Grant. Consider attending the auction, or contributing an item for the auction.  More details will be forthcoming in the fall newsletter. The auction date is October 10, 2009.

Notice of Events

Many events are held throughout the year at the churches in our chapter.  If you would like to include notice of your event in this newsletter which comes out quarterly in March, June, September and December, let us know.   The deadline for contributions to the newsletter is generally the first week of the quarter and would include those events held during the next 3-4 months.

Remembering Andy

Andrew E (Andy) Cattin passed into the arms of Jesus following a massive stroke on May 22, 2009 in Vancouver, at the age of 57.

Over the years Andy managed several restaurants in the Northwest and recently owned and operated the Battle Ground City Grill with his family.

A resident of  Clark County for the past 30 years,  he enjoyed his family, cooking and volunteering.  He was a treasured member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and played on the Lutheran Mixed Bowling League.  He spent 3 years as the Vice President and his fourth year as President of our Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

He will be greatly missed by many people.
