Clark County WA Chapter, THIRD QUARTER - SEPTEMBER 2009
ELECTIONS - 2010 CHAPTER BOARD

Once again Chapter Leadership Elections are drawing near.  This is a great opportunity to become involved in a leadership role in a local organization that allows you to be involved by directing financial resources to member churches and projects in your local community here in Clark County.

This year, your Chapter Board is soliciting candidates for four (4) board positions.  They are as follows:

Vice President, Financial Director, Assistant Financial Director, & Community Service Team Director.

The qualifications to be nominated require the following:
•   Chapter Leaders must be a Thrivent Financial Benefit or Associate Member.
•   Have skills to match the requirements of the open position.
•   Be 16 years old and above
*   Be able to attend monthly chapter meetings that are typically 1.5 hours in length.   Time commitment of most   positions is usually an additional 5 to 7 hours per month.  The descriptions and responsibilities are as follows:

Vice president—6 to 10 hours/month
•   Provides leadership in the absence of the president.
•   Serves as legislative contact for the chapter.
•   Leads the Nominating Committee to identify future chapter leaders.

Financial director—12 to 15 hours/month  (internet access required.)
•   Maintains financial records for the chapter board and service teams and authorizes fund transfers.
•   Manages the chapter’s operating funds budget.

Assistant financial director—6 to 8 hours/month
•   Assists financial director in maintaining financial accounting for the chapter board. Responsibilities similar to financial director.

Community service team director—4 to 5 hours/month
•   Trains and supports community service teams.
•   Ensures community service team activities are completed, funded and reported.

As a reminder, Chapter election requirements are:  (Most member churches  hold these elections between or after Sunday Services).
•   To be valid, the annual chapter leader election meeting must be held between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30.
•   Voting must be in person. Members cannot vote by proxy or mail.
•   Each member may cast one vote for each chapter leader position.
•   Elected chapter leaders hold office for one year, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.
•   Election results must be reported to Thrivent by current chapter leadership no later than Nov 30th.

I strongly encourage you to consider sitting on the board.  It is very rewarding to be able to contribute to local projects in your community.  I will need to receive nominations by September 30, 2009 to prepare a ballot to be disseminated to the member church coordinators so they may hold their elections by November 22, 2009.

If you have any questions about an office you may be considering, or wish to volunteer for one of the open board positions, please feel free to contact me at (360) 253-6822 or via e-mail at thoyer@yahoo.com.
I look forward to welcoming you to your new position on the board of Clark County Chapter of Thrivent.

ANNUAL DINNER

The Annual Chapter Dinner will be held on October 8th at Prince of Peace in Battle Ground this year.  The first 150 members to RSVP will be treated to a free dinner.

Julie Aalberg, Thrivent Community Relations Specialist, will attend along with several Thrivent Financial Representatives.  They will talk a bit about what is happening with the economy and the strength of Thrivent and a short review of what Thrivent Financial  has accomplished in the county, state and country.

Your church's Congregational Coordinator or other representative may pick up the sample ballot for the 2010 Chapter Leadership elections at the dinner.

Watch your mail for a postcard later in the month or early October for meeting time and RSVP instructions.  Hope to see you there.

FISH CELEBRATION

THANKS TO A CLARK CO. THRIVENT HANDS-ON GRANT, FISH  of Vancouver, our local food bank, was able to celebrate their 40th anniversary of serving the hungry with food and clothing in the  county this year.

This grant made it possible to thank all the many volunteers with a recognition luncheon in April when about 70 of those past and present volunteers enjoyed remembering all their experiences, and to publicly thank the citizens of Vancouver for their support all those years with a "Birthday Party" at Esther Short park on Thursday, July 18, at the first openair free concert with The Five Guys Named Moe, where FISH served 1440 pieces of birthday cake, free to all comers.  What a wonderful time they had!  And this Thrivent grant made it possible to do all this without touching any of the donations given by so many people that go to provide the huge amounts of food given out at the food bank on a regular basis.  THANKS, THRIVENT of Clark County

BEAVERS vs IOWA CUBS GAME

The game was great, the weather was great, and the turnout was great!

On August 21st, 270 Clark County Thrivent members gathered together at  PGE Park to witness a terrific 8-1 victory by the Portland Beavers  over the Iowa Cubs.  Perhaps the only thing more entertaining than the
game itself was the traditional hotdog-launch by board members Peter Berg and Thomas Bier who, this year, tossed ice cream sandwiches into the mix.  A combined 50 hotdogs and ice cream sandwiches were fought
over by Thrivent members young and old alike.  This event set the  attendance record for our seven-year-old chapter and was well enjoyed  by members.  The chapter would like to thank all of those who attended  the game and we look forward to seeing you next year.  To those who missed the game; we hope to see you next year.  If you want to  become involved with Thrivent by helping out with events like this  next year, contact a chapter leader today.
