East King County Chapter, Fall 2006
Good News / Bad News for 2006
What a fantastic year we have had at the East King County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. We were blessed with the challenge of funding two Habitat Houses on Snoqualmie Ridge, and the Golf Tournament and Auction and hours of Lutheran ‘sweat equity’ will have that commitment completed in December 2006.  We are looking toward repeating that challenge in 2007!

Now, we have good news and bad news … the good news is that our East King County Chapter congregations and members have been very busy supporting needs in our community! You have kept the Board very busy the past few months.

The bad news – for the moment – is that we are almost out of money for 2006!!  If you have been approved for a program, we have the money for you – if you haven’t applied for supplemental funds or hands-on monies, be aware that we may not be able to fund your request.  We will have financial totals at our November meeting and will fulfill the balance of our financial obligations then.

Remember, you can plan ahead for the entire calendar year … and submit Form #1 requests as early as January 2007 for your fund requests!! Our forms are easily downloadable at www.lutheransonline.com/eastkingcountychapter. We request that you e-mail them to eastkingcochapter@yahoo.com by the first Friday of each month. It is important for Board members to have time to review each request prior to our meetings. (Meetings are the second Wednesday of each month.) We look forward to hearing from you in 2007.

Postition Needed: Habitat for Humanity liason
This past year I had the opportunity to serve as the Chapter Specialist for the East King County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  It was a happy experience and I met many wonderful people at Habitat, Thrivent and of course in our Lutheran Churches. But, I am unable to serve as the Chapter Specialist in 2007 and am looking for someone who loves Habitat to take on this position.

The role of the Chapter Specialist is to serve as the liaison between Habitat for Humanity and all the Lutheran Churches on the Eastside.  The purpose is to encourage Lutherans and Thrivent members to volunteer on the houses being funded by the Thrivent Builds grant.  This grant provides 70% of the funds to build a home and asks that half of the volunteers building the home be Lutheran, and half of those volunteers to be Thrivent members.

The great news is you don't have to ask for money.  Last year we raised all the money we needed with our golf tournament and auction.  Plans are underway now to repeat this event and next year’s Chapter Specialist will again only have to ask for volunteers and not for money.  And, because 10 Lutheran Churches have already had great volunteer experiences working with Habitat for Humanity, they will be familiar with the program and know what to expect and it will be easy getting volunteers to work!

Please consider serving in this role of Chapter Specialist. I would be happy to speak with you directly about this position. Contact me, Woody Carlson, 2006 Chapter Specialist Habitat for Humanity, at woodycarlson@verizon.net.
