| East King County Chapter, Spring 2009 |
Everyone is aware of the importance of April 15, right? It's the day that the East King County Chapter of Thrivent and Thrivent Builds are teaming up to host a Welcome Hour for persons interested in promoting Thrivent Builds and Habitat for Humanity within their church! Once again the EKC chapter of Thrivent and Thrivent Builds are working with Habitat for Humanity to build two houses in the area. Church coordinators, or Champions, will help promote church member participation in the builds. A second Champion could also be used to help promote participation in the annual Golf Tournament and Auction in August. If you are interested in being a Champion for your church, contact Bob Spencer at bob@spencerred.org or phone the Special Events & Communications Officer for Habitat for Humanity in East King County, Jody Bridges at 425-869-6007 ext 239.
The quilters of the East King County are an AMAZING group of people. Made up of both women AND men, these dedicated people literally blanket the area near and far. Quilts from the area are regularly donated to Lutheran World Relief where they are shipped around the world. But closer to home, quilts are given to each family member of a Habitat for Humanity home on the day that home is dedicated. The East King County chapter of Thrivent will host a luncheon this year to honor these special people who give so faithfully of their time and talent. The luncheon will be hosted at First Lutheran Church in Bothell (10207 NE 183rd St, Bothell, WA 98011). The quilters gather to share techniques and stories and there is a bit of competition as to how many quilts have been made throughout the year. Each church in attendance is asked to bring a quilt to donate. This year donations will go to two different places: the Northshore Multiservice Center and the Eastside Baby Corner. RSVP now to Audrey Fisher, 425-486-2314 if your church is planning on attending!

Thrivent Financial is sponsoring an exciting new event in 2009 during Financial Literacy Month: Teach Your Kids to Share Day. Events will be held nationwide on Friday, April 24 to bring families together for fun and learning. Each event--for kids ages 6 to 10, parents and grandparents--will include the Parents, Kids and Money Matters(R) educational workshop, dinner and interactive activities to help kids learn about sharing, saving and spending. Each child will receive a Share/Save/Spend Piggy Bank. The EKC chapter will be involved in an event in our region at the Seattle Children's Museum, 305 Harrison Street in Seattle from 5:30 pm to 9 pm. The EKC chapter of Thrivent would like to encourage you to participate in the 10th annual JOIN HANDS DAY on Saturday, May 2, 2009. This national day of volunteering is sponsored by America's fraternal benefit societies, including Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, to generate awareness about the impact of grassroots volunteerism. It encourages youth and adults to come together to identify, plan and conduct activities to improve their communities. Thrivent members strongly support the purpose of this special day and the impact it has on communities nationwide. Last year, youth and adult members conducted nearly 3,000 activities across the country. In years past the EKC chapter has focused on one main activity. One year we joined with Lutherwood to help get the camp ready for the summer season. Another year, we helped landscape houses that were ready for dedication with Thrivent Builds and Habitat for Humanity. This year we would encourage YOU to put together your own activity and submit it for approval. As a Chapter of Excellence we have on hand funds dedicated to help you promote and sponsor your own Join Hands Day activity, but you need to get that information to us by our April 1 meeting. How do you submit an activity for consideration? First, find a need. Then form a service team of individuals from six separate Thrivent households. Fill out a Form #1 found on our website at www.lutheransonline.com/eastkingcountychapter, call Leslie Urie at 425-391-8737, or e-mail eastkingcochapter@yahoo.com. Additional information can be found at the JOIN HANDS DAY website at www.joinhandsday.org
